Need some initial feedback/validation on a project for recurring things

I'm working on a concept to allow individuals and teams to setup recurring "things", which they can then view in a upcoming or month view. The system will support notifications and assign responsibility for each "thing" if it is a task, for accountability purposes, or just display it some information. As an example you could have the following things:

  • Every morning have a team standup

  • Send marketing newsletter every Tuesday and Thursday evening

  • Marketing team planning 1st of every month

  • Dev team sprint kick off every Tuesday, every two weeks

  • Submit VAT reports every quarter

  • Monitor server logs every evening

These would then be displayed appropriately in a dashboard for all team members to view together or individually, and you can also create separate projects/teams. No need to set up tasks for repeat things anymore, or mess around with calendars. It is not a to do list, rather a set of repeat things that any business or SaaS provider could really benefit from.

Well, that's the idea anyway! I have produced some mock up designs and haven't written a single line of code yet. It would be awesome if you can take a look and let me know what you think?

I'm very curious. A bit of a tangent but what website are you using for the mockups?

Sure no problem! I'm using Balsamiq https://balsamiq.com/. I have decided to add the Chrome plugin and so far the web app seems great. I did this so my work gets saved automatically in Drive and it's also a cheaper plan at 5$/month after the month trial. They have a really good tutorial on Udemy , even though the app is straightforward, I highly recommend watching this. It's only 1 hour long but full of tips and tricks: https://www.udemy.com/wireframing-with-balsamiq-mockups/

Have you checked a similar project from @amyhoy ? Freckle I think

It seems like her Pep project is more similar? https://pep.cards

Thanks for the heads up, just checked out Freckle. Seems awesome with a lot of project management features. My concept is different though, it doesn't really have a time tracking feature. It's more about what needs to be worked on by who and when all in a vertical list, giving everybody an immediate overview. I admit though it's still in conceptual phase and still needs a lot of work.

I think this is a cool concept, but I am struggling to know what the difference between this and a recurring task in a calendar?

Will it have push notifications, or are users expected to check it each day?

Thanks for replying! That's a good question, you can setup recurring tasks in calendars but in my opinion calendars suffer from some problems: they are quite generic and don't address the problem of shared tasks between team members, and the agenda view is generally quite confusing.

There will definitely be push notifications, initially desktop and even reminders as part of a Chrome extension. The idea is also to get users and especially teams to check it each day (if they want), in a way to quickly see what is upcoming as part of their agenda. Ideally it will be open on a separate screen / browser tab all the time, kind of like a build monitor / status page. It should allow teams to collaborate better, and give bosses an overview of the status of something, e.g. is it being worked on, is there a problem, is it completed.
