Hey,
I’d like to write a few words about long-term goals and how I ended up writing Goalee.
The basic idea is that all the annoyances, conflicts or so-called problems we face in our everyday lives pale in comparison with our true goals in life. But we usually tend to lose track of what we desire most, exactly because of problems here and there.
A good approach is to write down your goals; it’s something many recommend and it does work. Until it doesn’t. At least that’s what happened to me — I wrote them down on a sheet of paper, but eventually started overlooking it.
I first tried using to-do apps, or habit tracking apps for this. But this isn’t something to be checked off, nor a habit to build; it’s a mindset change, if you will. So I ended up building Goalee to add long/mid-term goals and remind myself about them on a daily/weekly basis.
Start your company one day? Become rich? Settle down? Become famous? Whatever it might be, don’t lose focus; don’t forget what you desire most; or it will end up forgotten in the sea of daily struggles.
That’s about it. Simple enough, but it scratched my itch. One of the few apps I built that actually does that.
Hope you never forget your destination, but also enjoy the journey!
Hey Roland - this sounds like a cool project and a straightforward approach to help people keep their goals top of mind.
One quick question: let's say I get a reminder to build a great product (one of my personal goals) on Goalee. And then I take action and make progress towards it today.
What happens next? Do I log what I did into Goalee?
I'm asking because one of the key learnings from my project (www.tribefive.me) is that it's really important to help your users feel a sense of progress each time they use your app. On Tribe of Five, the daily act of checking in helps users quantify what they did each day and that in turn helps them feel like they are moving forward.
Happy to trade notes and learnings if you want. Just email me at jonathan@tribefive.me - always happy to chat with a fellow IH'er.
Cheers!
Jonathan
Hey, Jonathan!
Thanks for your feedback!
While the app can be used for “complete-able” goals, the main itch I had, and I think most of us do, is losing sight of our real & long-term goals. For example, I’d go “I want to lead a team of 3–5 in a few years”, or “I want to start my own company in 2–3 years”, then in 2 weeks I’d be distracted again by petty things like “this ticket isn’t specified properly”, or “x wasn’t fair to me”. Those reasons might be true and I might be right, but they only hinder my actual desire I had for the future.
It was on purpose to not track progress, to not have anything to check off or mark as complete — the main reason why I didn’t like using a to-do app for this: I don’t want to feel guilty if I don’t track/complete something in a day, there are other ways to do that, hehe.
I just needed that daily reminder that my real goals/desires are bigger than my daily annoyances. I don’t think I want it to slowly turn into a project tracking app — I have an idea for something in that direction already, so stay tuned 💪🏻
You got a nice product there, btw, congrats! Looks similar in purpose to ChallengeBeat 😄 We can for sure trade notes! I’m just starting to be active in here, so I’m still in the shy phase 😅
