Show IH: Good fucking news.

My first MVP: http://goodfucking.news/

I'd appreciate feedback!

  1. 6

    Awesome idea.

I've always been angry about how most of the news online was bad. It's just ridiculous. Bad news after bad news. It's not even statistically possible for there to be no good news on a given day.

    1. 1

Totally agree. This is because by instinct we carve to know whatever bad happens, so we can avoid it. So what do they show in the TV (in order to get the most viewers)? All of the bad news.

  2. 5

Maybe in terms of user acquisition you could create an automated Twitter account that tweets out those news?

  3. 3

Love it mate. The story (and image) about the Indian doctor was moving.

  4. 3

Definitely a cool concept. Few initial thoughts - with the preface I know it’s an MVP ;)

    • repeat articles popped up a couple times. UX wise, it felt like a bug

    • maybe have the articles open in an iframe or custom browser so you don’t take the user off your site. You’ll lose them that way. And then you could have another button under that view to jump to the next good fucking news article. Like StumbleUpon style.

    1. 2

      Good feedback mate.

There are definitely some UX thingies to fix. Right now there are like 35 news, they won't repeat until you run out of news and then start seeing the same news again.

  5. 3

Cool :). Good fucking name too.

  6. 2

    Bookmarked.

Thought: It'd be nice to have a selector that lets you load "n" of articles. If I could set it to "3" and have 3 posts come up, that'd make me happy.

  7. 2

This is Awesome and a breather to read something that motivates us.

    Idea: ✔

    MVP: ✔

    Shipped: ✔

    People Like it: ✔

    I need a back button :D tho

You are doing it right keep it up.

  8. 2

Awesome idea! Enjoyed clicking around and reading a feel-good article.

There is something very elegant about only showing me one article at a time. Helps me focus on enjoying it!

  9. 2

I was talking about creating something similar a few weeks ago with someone, I was just so damn tired of hearing bad news all the time. I love the idea, good on you for creating it, more than I would have ever done :D

I don't like the site layout with only showing one article at a time but hey I understand its a MVP and you just got started.

    good luck mate!

  10. 2

    Great Idea and execution 💪

  11. 2

Funny yet informative. Love this page.

  12. 2

How should I put it... I fucking love it haha. Man, I wish you the very best. I hate the news are all killings, rapes and theft. I want THAT type of news!

  13. 2

    love it hahaha

  14. 2

But but but... News is mostly bad because that's what we're wired to pay attention to.

  15. 2

Haha, wow. I thought about building this before when Kanye dropped The Life of Pablo because of that lyric:

"Ayy. Y'all heard about the good news?"

In fact, I had pablo.news registered for it. Basically it would recreate TLOP cover with the "good news" headline and image.

    Love this!

  16. 2

A while back I bought a domain oneperfectlygoodnews.com which was for this same reason. Congrats on launching the MVP.

    1. 1

haha, sounds exactly like the same idea!

  17. 2

I was having a down turn in motivation once and decided to build something over night.

I think it's similar to what you're trying to achieve.

I started scraping subreddits with gifs and aggregate them on a timeline. I ended up not deploying it.

My impression is that such farm websites could have some traffic but monetising would be limited to ads.

Don't mean to demotivate, but think of where you want to be with this website in 2 years?

    Good luck!

    1. 1

You are totally right. As I said this is my first MVP, I actually think it's a kinda stupid / silly idea, but for sure was a good exercise into have an idea, build it and actually put it out there.

Was mostly an attempt to get used to idea -> MVP -> launching. I do have more ideas in the build.

      Thanks for the feedback!

      1. 2

It feels great to make and publish something. It's good for mental health. Good luck!

  18. 1

Not sure how you plan to get the content. I suppose scraping is the only sane way.

But I would cast a human eye over it to curate the content. Will get much better quality that way, even though it's a pain.

I think hand curated info is so many times better than raw scraped.

  19. 1

    Great Idea, great website :)

  20. 1

That is a seriously good idea - love it.

    BUT ...

I want my kids to read it. Not with that name. Appreciate the attention grabbing nature, but please give us a year 9 (12 year old) kid friendly version.

Hate the one story layout - give us an ever expanding bbc news style summary-link.

    Good luck!

    1. 2

Totally, didn't really think of the name. Was just one minute tired of bad news and thought "need some good fucking news"...

The one story layout was mostly to get people to focus on the good stuff, and not just skim through just like another list.

All good feedback, really appreciate it.

      1. 2

Actually, someone else said it here - let me choose how many articles I want in a page. 1,5, 20, 100.

      2. 2

The one story layout was mostly to get people
to focus on the good stuff, and not just skim
        through just like another list.

I can see that. Maybe the main bit is a single story with a list down the side? Dunno - guess I like lists :)

  21. 1

Love it! Maybe a list view or category view would be nice.

    1. 1

Interesting, definitely something to think about it.

  22. 1

    Great idea, mate!

Sadly, it is not working on my browser (Chrome 68.0.34) or it is the region-based issues :(

It is a kind of special problem in my monarchic-authoritarian country (which is officially democratic and parliamentary) & we have really strong censorship over almost everything and news are really filtered and most of the time are depressing.

I'd love to discuss the concept & further stuff more in detail, reply me if you are interested :)

  23. 1

Feels little buggy in opera. Overall good concept.

would love to contribute, Hit me up if you need any help in technology or SEO.

    1. 1

Yeah, haven't done much crossbrowing yet. Will take care of that!

And yeah, would love some help with SEO :) Hit me up at goodfreaking.news@gmail.com

      1. 1

        Sure thing,

what specific help you are looking for in SEO?

        I am available on hello@axitmehta.com

        1. 1

Exactly, I don't know much about SEO, so I guess all about it ?

          Will reach to you!

  24. 1

I'd like to suggest that you make the page scroll down a little when "Another one" button is pressed (maybe to the point where the button border is touching the top of the screen), so that the user has the article already visible in full, not having to manually scroll down to see the full photo and the title.

    1. 1

      Good feedback mate, appreciate 🙏🏽

  25. 1

Q: how do you deal with sports? one's good news is another's bad news...

    1. 1

Definitely something to look into in the future!

  26. 1

    Good fucking job. Love it!

  27. 1

Interesting. I'm curious, how do you plan to monetize it?

    1. 1

I don't, for me was more an exercise/experiment to have an idea, develop a MVP and put it out there.

      1. 2

I get it. The experience obtained is good 👌

  28. 1

This is great. How do you plan to scale it / keep the content fresh and high quality?

    1. 1

Don't know about scale, this was more a silly experiment for me. But I think keeping the content fresh and high quality is the hardest thing. Right now is a mix of "old" news and "today's" news. Still trying to get more sources, probably will need to scrape some websites, not sure yet. Definitely there is a challenge there.

  29. 1

    doesn't work in firefox :/

    1. 1

what version of firefox do you have ?

it seems to work fine on 61.0.2

      1. 1

it works in Chrome, but it isn't working in Firefox Developer Edition version 63.0b4. CORS issues. These are the messages :

        1. 1

Interesting, thank you for taking the time to report this mate!

      2. 1

it's because of FF tracking protection

    2. 1

      Ups, good to know!
