Hi all! Hacked together ListChat - totally inspired by findkismet on HN, but I wanted more from it.
Here's an IndieHackers list that will match us in 3s: https://list.chat/subscribe/indie-hackers-com/bQiJQztIGA2HfOJRHVwH
Is this ... cool?
ListChat matches you with other list subscribers over email. It'll hide your email from matches and let you create a list for anything, really.
Any list ideas? If you create a list of your own, share it here so we can all join. Excited to see what list ideas people come up with and your IndieHacker-style no-holds-barred, candid feedback.
Thanks!

What a cool idea OP
Or in this case... @ip
Thanks @shaunkelleher. Did you end up joining the list? Any list ideas?
If you want to do the brides one I have an idea of how you can monetize email me mail@tshaun.com
Havent joined it. I would think weight loss would be a good one, having a buddy to help you lose the pounds. I dont know if you can geotarget but if you can I would think matching two brides in the same city could help each other find vendors + emotional support.
Cool project idea! Just signed up for the IndieHackers list.
Sweet! Would love to see it grow big enough to sustain a long run of matches.
Question - right now we're matching 3 people in one email thread by default (idea is that it might reduce the awkwardness). Think 1-on-1 matches are a better way to go?
3 could also be awkward. If 2 people hit it off then what happens? Do they just spin off a separate email thread?
Have you heard of Donut? Donut is for people to meet within a company. Yours is the B2C version of that!
To keep from participants getting lost if 'reply-all' isn't hit, it's a masked email address that forwards to all others you matched with. So spin-off will require sharing some info for now, unfortunately.
I've heard of Donut, yeah! Didn't put the two together, though. That's great company to be in.
@Booligoosh - thoughts on matching a group of 3 vs. 1-on-1? What do you prefer for your list? (Right now we default to matching groups of 3).
I feel like multiple 1-on-1's going on at the same time would be best. But I think for the Indie Hackers list, groups of 3 would work better ;)
Okay! Switched your list over to 1-on-1 matching. Good luck! Let's see how it goes :)
Awesome idea! Joined the list, and made one for bloggers... https://list.chat/subscribe/bloggers/5CiUxPbnKAnkAFRbFsa4
Ah @Booligoosh! That's a good one. A nice way to happen upon link share and crosspost opportunities maybe? Any ideas how we can get more bloggers to join it to be matched?
Bloggers, helping bloggers. Neat idea. I'll post that link in a digital nomad group I'm part of in FB :)
Totally! Love that the community is coming up with their own groups and use cases. Thanks for sharing it @njho!

Well then. That's awesome! Hahah thanks for the post + kind words! Excited to see what you think after your first match!
:D
If I like it, I might make it a thing for my mailing list to get to know each other 👍
Then i'll be on it - just signed up.
Let me know what you think - should have your first match tomorrow.
Hi all! Wrote a '2 months later' for ListChat that you might be interested in. Everyone here was so helpful - thought I would update you.
2 months later @ ListChat
Thank you again for your support, great feedback and willingness to try new things. This community is awesome.

Paging @shaunkelleher, @Booligoosh, @jianinglai, @njho, @Reinder, @Adith, @zanzibar, @Janva!
Amazing, thanks for following up. Just read your article as well!
For anyone who is on the fence about trying this...JUST DO IT!
I have been using ListChat for a few days now and it's AWESOME. Met 3 different cool ass Indie Hackers already and we've had some cool conversations.
@ip - what happens after 24 hours? Does the masked email address stop working?
I have some other detailed feedback that I'd love to share with you. Email me (jonathan@tribefive.me) and I can share some notes from my experience so far!
@jianinglai! Thanks so much for the rave review. So happy you’ve gotten value from it.
Post 24hrs, that’s the idea, but nothing happens for now. I want to create a sense of urgency to encourage people to reach out, but on chatting with others, it seems chats extend way beyond. Any advice? Maybe a few others can weigh in, too?
Excited to hear your thoughts. Check your inbox!
It is probably me as there are a lot of upvotes but I don't get it. How does this work?
I subscribe to a list and I get an email from the list from 2 other people? Then we start an email exchange based on the introduction with the three of us?
An example on the website might be good to show what you mean with match and how cool it is be matched.
I don't want to add my email to test it as I don't know what this triggers and I don't want to pollute any list.
Hey @Reinder - thanks for your candid response!
You understand it perfectly.
An example would totally make things clearer from the outset.
I think you might get something out of matching with other fellow IndieHackers on the IndieHacker ListChat here. You can always leave the list later.
Try it! Would love your thoughts on what other lists we can create (+ how to grow them) and how we can make ListChat a useful service.
(@shaunkelleher has an awesome idea re city-by-city support groups that we're considering working on together, but it can be anything.)
I came here from the city-to-city idea. I think I get it, you should reach out to seets2meet.com, they try to generate synergies through random encounters, (in actual meeting spaces) I think this would work great in their ecosystem. So you could subscribe to a daily list of a workspace to get introduced to people.
Interesting - took a look at seats2meet. Have you tried it before?
I like the idea of a coworking space using it to match members. I wonder if it needs to be something more sophisticated than a random match, though? Thoughts?
Yes I have used their co-working spaces in the past, the interesting part is that they want to endorse serendipity moments, and they already use an check in system to allow you to see who is working at the same working space as you are.
From my perspective the first version could be a random match, based on the people that are working there (so that is your list), then you can always make it more sophisticated.
So you'll get an email from list.chat after the check in introducing you to 3 people that are also working there to have a chat/coffee.
They are pretty open to cooperate so I suggest to reach out and see.
Amazing idea @ip!
I subscribed to the IH list and also created https://list.chat/subscribe/early-stage-updates/YmLpMGrfXRUE8a2JurMp ✌
Subscribed! This is a great one. A list chat to connect people to share and discuss early stage startup updates.
This is actually really cool. Nice work!
Thanks @zanzibar! Come up with any list ideas? Trying to wrack my brain for some use cases!
This is cool, I was actually planning on doing something like this, including also a manual matching system like tinder (apart from email matching), there's a lot of communities where this could work.
