The pivot is on

Last night I started building out what I think is an exciting pivot for SongBox.

As well as just private demo submissions with real time notifications - which is the money maker. I am going to be offering profile pages where people can showcase their music to the world.

This will increase virality and brand awareness.

I always thought SongBox would sit alongside something like soundcloud. But it seems like my users are looking for an alternative to soundcloud.

Hopefully be able to have the new functionality out by this time next weekend.

Will you be charging a modest fee for maintaining a profile page? It sounds like it is essentially a digital classified ad with interactivity so that must have commercial value for your artists. Even £15 a year multiplied by 1,000 artists represents £15k you wouldn't otherwise have!

I have been contemplating that. However rather than monetising it and I hoping it will widen the point of entry for those choosing SongBox Pro - the paid service.

Out of curiosity, what don't people like about SoundCloud?

    1. 1

I’m actively investigating this but scanning Reddit

      • bots

      • adverts

      • too saturated

      1. 2

I'm not a big user of it, but am I right in thinking that one of the biggest attractions to using SoundCloud is that it already has a large listener base who can discover your music? How difficult would it be to solve that with a new product? (The old Network Effect conundrum...)

        1. 1

That’s actually the problem. There is so much “white noise” on soundcloud that getting “discovered” is no longer likely.

          Time for a new solution.

That’s what my “too saturated” point was referring too.

Getting discovered on SoundCloud is easy. Just be Post Malone.

Sorry I don’t get the reference.

              1. 1

Post Malone is a famous rapper these days, but he started out on SoundCloud. He posted the song White Iverson and I can't remember who but someone very famous in the rap scene tweeted about it and overnight he blew up.

Any idea how you would attract listeners to the platform?

            1. 1

Same as I’ve been doing up to this point, advertising.

I’ve been utilising reddit ads, quora ads and google ads to good effect for not a huge amount of money.

              Oh and bing ads.
