So yesterday after discussing it with my wife for quite some time I finally took the step and resigned from my job to focus on my own company. It feels great but also a little scary. I've got three kids and a mortgage so I can't do anything impulsive/crazy/stupid :)
I've been working a bit on the side since then and saved up money to take the jump at some point. And now it's finally time for me to become independent.
So what is the plan? Since June I've been working on Bitboard (https://getbitboard.com) which helps teams manage Bitbucket issues using boards and cards. It's still in the very early phase of its life, but I've onboarded some users with success already (despite some very rough edges).
Other than that I'll be doing some more freelancing to keep money in the bank. I've saved enough to keep the company running for quite some time, but I plan to keep doing freelance work until I either make Bitboard profitable or find another viable product.
2018 is going to be awesome.
Best of luck!
Be prepared for a rougher ride than you expect and, when things inevitably get difficult, be very upfront with your wife always. She is taking just as big a leap of faith as you are so don't ever leave her behind. Make sure she is always a real and valuable part of Team Jenson.
I know it sounds trite but people lose relationships because they focus too narrowly on their work and think they can simply pick up the personal stuff again when they are ready. You can't.
Anyway, I admire your courage in taking this leap into the unknown and I really hope you can make a go of it!
Great advice. My wife was the one suggesting that we do this :) I know this will be a rough ride, but I'm not going for world domination. We've prepared, and we're in it together. The fact that we don't have any money issues helps a lot.
We're quite fortunate because we live in Denmark. Taxes might be high (which I don't mind), but we do have the benefits of a remarkable public welfare system.
We've made the necessary preparations so that it doesn't need to be a stressful nightmare.
Thankfully, the UK also has a good welfare system! And, yes, I did end up needing it for a while!
This is a fantastic reply. Thank you for highlighting that valuable nugget!
Welcome to the club, mate! 👏🏻
This year, i believe, will be the year of indie hackers!!
Thanks :)
I agree
Good luck Jakob! I made the plunge to freelancing 8 years ago, and it was one of the most stressful - and fun! - periods of my life. I made the mistake of not having a clear plan or enough money in the bank to do it well, but it worked out in the end. Out of curiosity, how many months could you go without pay at this point? Could be a good measurement for other people looking to do the same.
Bitboard looks like a fun project - I hope it'll bring you success. Do you have any revenue from it yet?
Here's to an awesome 2018!
Thanks :)
No, but I'll implement paid plans soon. I don't expect much from it in the beginning. Feedback from pre-release users has been positive, but they do ask for some critical features before wanting to pay for it.
I've saved enough money in the company to have a sallary without any income for about 18 months. So the plan is to keep making income by doing freelance work so that the buffer keeps being about a year at a minimum. So basically I intend to treat any products I work on as a client. And at some point it might become a client that gets most of my attention (when it can pay me enough) :)
See if any of your Bitboard users need freelancers to integrate/import their systems to Bitboard. That way your freelance work also be related to Bitboard.
Yeah it's definitely worth investigating selling services around the product. Great suggestion - thanks
or even better -> get freelance jobs with companies that use bitbucket and convince them to use bitboard
Would be great if that could work out.
Nothing wrong with freelancing till you make it. It's an amazing journey and wouldn't trade it for the world. Eat when you can and stock it away. 12month runways are an amazing feeling.
The one thing that I quickly found out is that "steady" paycheck is only as good for as long as it comes. But when you've mastered working for yourself and keeping a runway? Nothing feels better.
Good luck!
I can image :) I'm looking forward to that point.
Also no better motivator than needing to keep a roof over your families head :) You've got all the motivation you need to be successful mate! You will.
:)
Looks good mate, well done.
One thing, why does it need all these permissions to modify?
Read your account information
Read and modify your repositories' issues
Read and modify your team's project settings, and read and transfer repositories within your team's projects
Read and modify your repositories and their pull requests
Administer your repositories
Read and modify your team membership information
Read and modify your repositories' webhooks
I'm not happy about that and its preventing me from using it.
Thanks,
Sam
The modify permission is because I originally intended to be able to manage most of the things in Bitboard. I ended up removing this from the scope of the initial release. I will go through the permissions and test out what I can leave out. I agree that some of the modify permissions should be able to be removed for now.
I'll look into it.
Thanks
Let me explain
When you login I store your avatar, email and unique bitbucket id. Avatar to present in the UI. Email to create an account and butbucket id because it is necessary when figuring out which repositories, issues, pull requests etc. you have created, updated etc.
Bitboard syncs issues. So when you create a card in Bitboard it creates an issue in the Bitbucket repository the board is connected to
Necessary to figure out which repositories you administrate/own
Bitboard links pull requests to a card. So if you mention an issue id in a pull request description (like write "closes #id") the pull request will appear beneath the card on the board.
This is because at some point Bitboard will allow you to create repositories when creating a board. This might not be necessary now and I will look into this. Thanks for pointing that out
Again necessary to know about which repositories you are connected to. Will see if I can remove the "modify" part
When creating a board Bitboard creates a webhook in the repository connected to the board. This is necessary so it can be notified about changes in issues, pull requests and code pushed to the repository. When you create a branch prefixes with an issue id (like "issue_id-some-random-branch-name") and push it Bitboard moves the card for that issue to the "In Progress" column and it sets you as being assigned to the issue.
I can understand that. I would probably react the same and I will make sure to explain it in the application.
Congrats and welcome to the other side!
I left my gig in September to work on my own venture - 5 months later, still loving every second of it.
Some ideas that would have helped me:
Find a way to stay accountable. Users can help you do this, but nothing beats some online forum (here) or a way to publicly post your goals. I've found as a solo technical founder, this is very very important. I paired up with a friend and we post weekly goals here: http://www.accountable.group/
Is there a workspace / coworking spot you can join? Or are you working from home? Having a place to go consistently made the jump feel a little more natural, since I could gel into a routine.
My wife has been a strong source of strength during the hard times. I don't vent everything to her, but I'm extremely transparent when I'm feeling pressure or stress. This took practice -
communication of those signals will be key!
Anywho, congrats again to you and your family! Having a full time job is way riskier than what you're doing, if you factor in opportunity cost :)
Sidenote, Bitboard looks cool!
BTW the link in your profile to payitoff doesn't seem to work. It links to https://payitoff.io - https://www.payitoff.io works fine
fixed, thank you!
Thank you sir :)
Payitoff looks interesting. Great niche to work on IMO. Do you have any paying customers?
1: Yeah I'm having coffee meetings with a friend every other week to stay accountable
2: I have an office at home I use for now. Our house is fairly large so it is fine for now. Once I start earning money through Bitboard I'll consider finding an office space
3: Very good point. This is definitely something I have to work on.
Yeah I'll be do freelancing. Teaching would be awesome. I loved being teaching assistant at university :)
I couldn't agree more :)
:-D Thanks
Way to go! Sounds like you're doing it right - you have buy-in from your family, you've got a great 18mo runway, and you plan on doing some freelancing to help with cash flow. Well done, and good luck!
Thanks :)
With three kids it's not really realistic to jump into something like this without a plan and savings. :)
For sure :)
Best of luck!! Would love to read some blog posts on how it goes and the challenges/successes you have.
Thanks. I'll definitely start blogging about it in the near future. I've got one month left at my job. So when March hits I'll start a blog.
Yeah...
Good luck! Very brave move. :)
Thanks :) We'll see if I look back on it as a stupid move in a couple of years :)
THese moves are never stupid when looking back. Either, you make it and will be happy or you fail, gaining very good experience and will be happy and armed with valuable experience... :)
I agree 100%! :-D
Hey, that takes lot of balls to do it, good luck. Hope things work out for you. Don't forget to take care of your health while hustling and spending time with family.
Must have explored possibility of wife going to work?
Cheers.
Those a great points. Exercise is one thing I plan to do every other day. That is one of the things I've been looking forward to be able to do while the kids are in school/daycare
She is already working. I don't think I would dare to do this if she wasn't :)
Good luck Jacob!
Thanks :)
This is incredible and also very inspiring. Im also on the same path as you my friend and I wish you all my best!
Good luck to you to my friend. What are you working on?
Congratulations! And thanks for making this getbitboard, I started using it, the boards are a big missing piece of Bitbucket!
Thanks. That is great. Would love your feedback at some point :) Again it's still very rough with some important features missing.
Well done taking the leap!! Was it the vikings that invented the technique of burning their boats to ensure success?
Thanks.
That I don't know. I might look it up at some point :)
Hey Jakob, fellow Dane here. I wish you all the best with your project. Never forget that life is to short to not pursue your dreams and ambitions, and you have chosen to follow them. Congratulations to you for doing that.
Thanks Yass. Whare are you situated in Denmark?
Hi Jakob, I live In Copenhagen. About you?
Hi i actually managed to to work only 3 days a week so i can work more on my own stuff, so that was a good enough solution for me. I also dont have money problems.
its pretty tough that you have 3 kids, feels like "hard mode", anyway, good luck
I've been working on my company nights and weekends for a couple of years now. I need to try to pursue it full time now. Might be a good solution for me in the future though.
It's not that bad as long as nobody is sick :) Thanks :)
wow couple years ? for me its now maybe about 8 months, feels like an eternity, but we should go live this month actually. Maybe i should write about that as well, will see.
I haven't worked on Bitboard for that long. But I've been doing freelance work. Bitboard was started in May or June 2017.
aha i see i did started a bit later i think.
i am also a contractor/freelancer developer, its actually good money.
Yeah it is a great way to make some money once you figure out how to balance getting new customers while doing actual work for clients :)
Best of luck! Looks awesome.
Thanks - much appreciated.
Yes,
May be
Cheering for you dude!
Thanks. Now the hard work begins :)
all the best!
Thanks :)
Happy you made the jump :) Good luck, work hard and don't give up!
Thanks - I'll do my best :)
Congratulations on removing the shackles..
Thanks. Feels great even though (or maybe because) the road ahead will be tough and filled with uncertainty :)
Bitboard looks good, currently I am on Trello. I see value of having something tightly integrated to git than Trello.
Thanks. I really appreciate that.
I hope I can make something that will interest you then :)
Last week my team member convinced me to move to Trello from bitbucket issues. I am liking Trello better than bitbucket. I will also try bitboard sometime and give you feedback.
Trello is definitely a step in the right direction. I created Bitboard because I was using Trello and was missing a tighter integration with my Git workflow.
Thanks - that would be awesome
Best of luck man!
Thanks :)
Hey Jakob, I hope you are already aware of Trello boards in Bitbucket.
Anyway, good luck with everything!
Yeah but they target two different audiences. Trello is positioned as something to use in the marketing department. Bitboard does a lot of automatic updates to the board based on activity in the git repository.
But it is a valid concern and one of the reasons why Bitboard in the near future will support other services as well.
Thanks
Best of luck Jakob!
Make sure that you have some plan or enough money in the bank.
Bitboard looks great!
Thanks
Yeah I think I do :)
Thanks. There's still a long way to go :)
Good luck Jakob, it was not an easy decision and it will not be easy going forward, but it will surely be great to be free!
Thanks. It really wasn't but it's going to be fun for the whole family.
best of luck . web app looks good!
Thanks :)
