The struggle of choosing a name and domain for your business

Front uses Frontapp.com. For your case I really like getDevInsights.com Don't over think it....

Good call on Front! I added it to my post as an example.

          Awesome!

Hacker News & PG advice is, well, just advice - take it with a grain of salt. There are thousands of famous US brands not using the .com domain, doing completely fine. Off the top of my head - Twitch.tv, Play.it, abc.xyz, pony.ai .... I'm yet to see a real customer turn away a Saas for not being on a .com domain

I believe it's becoming more accepted nowadays.

      Here is another example: https://www.notion.so/

      More great examples – thanks!

twitch.com redirects to twitch.tv! I don't think .com matters (though I was fortunate to get progressionpack.com)

      Wow that's a great example!

There's a really interesting story about how Dropbox went from getdropbox.com to dropbox.com in this Podcast episode: http://podcastnotes.org/2018/08/30/dropbox/

Your thought process and self-stressing over the name is way too relatable :) I just went through this with my app, and the relief over just choosing was immense.

And I think devinsights.io is a great URL!

  6. 1

Maybe for B2C .com may be important but I think for B2B and (especially sites for developers or designers) non .com domains are fine. I have a product on non .com domain www.Watermark.ink

Could you tell a bit more about your product? What tech stack are you going to use? How are you thinking about marketing it?

  8. 1

    Why not try devinsights.io or devinsights.app ?

    1. 2

      I ended up choosing devinsights.io

I got a friend named Devin and it reads like DevinSights to me.😄 Great name though!

Don't forget to check auction market places too. There are so many out there that you can find gems for cheap. Our app is adding 40,000 a day to a searchable DB from auctions and a large portion have no views.
