What did you build or achieve this weekend?

Hey everyone,

Following up from last week, did you folks also build or achieve anything cool this weekend?

I finished off my pricing research and then started working on a cool integration of Palar with Zendesk and Intercom (their APIs are actually good =) ).

More and more, I realize there's no better time to work on tasks that require 100% focus than weekends.

What about yourself? Don't forget to link it up!

  1. 8

Absolutely nothing and it felt good!

With all these weekend threads, it's important to take a break and focus on yourself too :-)

  2. 8

This weekend was full of testing and bug-fixing. I guess it doesn't help that both I and my partner are perfectionists haha.

We were working for a few months on a project that we just made public earlier today and we're planning on soft launching it. You can check it out here: https://chartbrew.com/ 🍻

    1. 4

Your perfectionism was a good thing - really great design and UX!

      1. 1

Thanks, great to hear that 🙌

    2. 2

Really pretty, and really needed. Graphing is more complex than it needs to be.

      1. 1

One of the main reason this product exists. Really excited to see where we go with it 😺

    3. 2

Great UX and the colors are amazing, you may also know this bug but when I surf your website (low end phone for testing: Samsung J1) the text on the cards (MySQL and Firebase) are not centered at the Supporting soon section.

      1. 1

Awesome thanks a lot for pointing it out ✌

    4. 2

      Love the site.

    5. 1

      This is amazing. Keep up

    6. 1

      What's it built on d3.js?

      1. 1

We're using ChartJs at the moment. We might look towards d3 after we start introducing more complex chart types

  3. 4

This weekend I was in the flow! 😌 I worked on 2 small apps to scratch my personal itch, so it was very much passion-driven.

One I use now to read my gas meter automatically and upload the reading to Dropbox. It uses Raspberry Pi, Pi Camera and my small app written in Go. 📬

The code with a description in README is here: github.com/murdho/pi-read-meter

The other one I started, but didn't finish yet. It's again a small app. It regularly checks the song playing in one radio whose music I really enjoy and then adds the song to Spotify playlist(s), so I could listen to the music without being interrupted by news and also while being offline. ☺️

Here's the unfinished code, written in Ruby: github.com/murdho/playlists_by_tallinn

I'm eager to get to work with these again after I've given some other things my much-needed attention! 👨‍🎨

    1. 2

Nice! I enjoyed reading your code and hope the little app brings you happiness ✌🏾

      1. 1

Thank you! Glad to hear that you enjoyed reading it! 🙂

  4. 4

We at draftss.com built a feedback feature for founders to Get Feedback on their landing page.

    URL: http://draftss.com/feedback.html

  5. 3

Made a static website for my parents' honey farm. Next would be to get a custom domain and then market it. The only problem is that I cannot communicate taste over the internet sigh -.- You can find it here: https://yellowhexagon.github.io/

    1. 1

You're not the only one selling honey online. What have you learned from your competitors' websites and marketing strategies?

    2. 1

      gret jorb!

I cannot communicate taste over the internet

I would suggest, instead of (or in addition to) the honeycomb, have pictures of it being spread on toast, poured in tea, drizzled on pie, what have you. Honey itself doesn't sell, it's the yummyness that honey provides :)

      1. 1

Hmmm that's a great idea. I still want a picture to show the origins of where the honey came from, but yeah I think that might be useful.

    3. 1

Nice - only issue I found was the font in the beginning.

Because the image is so bright, it's hard to read it with a white font. Maybe change it to black?

      1. 1

Hey John, thanks for giving me feedback on the site. I tried black font and it actually is even less visible for some odd reason (the background is bright so you wouldn't really expect that). And other colors don't really fit into the color scheme of the website now that I've made it lol...

  6. 3

Saturday I wrote support for Elasticsearch for one of my projects related to the social network Mastodon https://gitlab.com/chaica/mastocount

And Sunday I Just ended first version of Stripe payment for my soon-to-be-released Job Board https://www.linuxjobs.io

And now headed to bed, at last!

  7. 3

I launched on product hunt and received 5 orders on my shopify store!

  8. 3

I did a lot of things this weekend:

    • I took my kids to my nephew's 7th birthday party. We had a lot of fun.

    • We went to visit the open day at the fire station. It was great.

    • I didn't sleep enough, because... I finally 'launched' something. That's right: 7 months after joining IH I finally put up a landing page online for a project I'm working on: https://bizmaker.be/

The page is in Dutch (targeting my local, Flemish, market). The product is sort of a site builder, but instead of building it with blocks it uses questions and choices to get the information needed to build a basic-but-pretty website for small companies/entrepreneurs. Still a long way to go (I already dislike a lot of my choices :D) but having something out there and the prospect of collecting some clicks and subscribers from google ads feels great.

    1. 1

That's totally useful for small business owners - I completely see the use case. How do you deliver the website, would it be something like a standard CMS?

      1. 1

The plan is to have their site (page) hosted on my server. After the initial setup there will be an editor. More advanced users can choose to use a more advanced editor for more flexibility, but for most of my users it will probably use the same chatbot-like interface: "Would you like to make the logo [bigger] or [smaller]"...

I talked to a few potential clients, and I noticed that most of them don't see design and content as separate concepts. So the editor I'm building will allow them to change both in the same interface.

  9. 3

I finished the the first project of my 12 startups in 12 months challenge. I have soft launched it and in the next week I‘ll focus entirely on marketing.

I wrote a short blog post about this:

    https://chriswiso.com/first-startup/

    Project (1/12): https://www.growthstore.io

    1. 1

Nice one Chris, I'm setting myself a similar challenge! Really like the concept of growthstore. Have bookmarked it! Where are you based?

      1. 1

        Thx and good luck! Germany.

  10. 2
    • Spent 2 hours to deploy a landing page (http://tapsquad.eu) for our mobile game. Googled for a free bootstrap css landing page and changed text + images.

    • Bought the domain for €3.00 per year.

    • Patched some bugs and disabled ads for our game.

  11. 2

Got 1st in Product Hunt and got over 300 subscribers to Nomad Flights 😀 best launch yet .

  12. 2

I changed my landing page for an Alexa Skill that lets you track your mood. Thank you for checking in out

  13. 2

Added a new Settings page to my SaaS product (under development) and more important, added 2FA support via OTP (Google Authenticator, etc)

  14. 2

A bit of a design hustle.

Created some assets for Instagram and set up some FB ads.

Also, wrote a blog post on Saturday.

  15. 2

I reached level 115 in world of warcraft.

Joke aside, sometimes all you need is good break :)

  16. 2

This is my first post on IH but I'm inspired everyday by you all! This weekend I fixed a critical bug in my newly published freewriting app, Dark Draft - https://www.darkdraft.app - It took a few hours to fix my data model but it felt so good publishing.

    1. 1

Welcome aboard! How exactly does darkdraft hide the text, is it so that people around can't see it?

      1. 2

Good question, It's based on a writing technique called "Freewriting". Dark Draft blurs out the active text letting you type your thoughts direct from brain to screen...it's also great when you're on a train / plane and aren't ready to reveal your Master Plan Pt. 3

        1. 1

I really like this idea, I feel like I'd want to see the previously 5-10 words or like after each full stop it get's blurred - the idea that it is perpetually blurred makes me resistant to the model, though I understand the concept.

          1. 1

Appreciate it @blunicorn, that's good feedback - check it out and see how it flows for you. The autocomplete bar is enabled so you can see the last word typed which gives you a starting point. I always found myself stuck on just starting the sentence so this really gets you moving.

            1. 1

android user unfortunately :'( I personally don't use autocomplete either, though I appreciate nearly everybody does. I'll see if I can try the app next time I'm with a friend using an iphone :) Keep up the great work!

  17. 2

I posted my project on Indie Hackers on Saturday morning. On the post, I got some feedback https://www.indiehackers.com/forum/show-ask-ih-launched-a-new-product-what-are-your-thoughts-on-how-i-should-sell-a681ab2118.

I implemented a card slider, updated the content on the website (www.wisecharlie.com) and implemented once a month email content strategy. Super agile work this weekend! Cheers to all the hardworking people here!

  19. 2

I JUST finished finding a reliable way to finally break free from Google's AppEngine and move my app to a new platform. I still need to rebuild the whole backend but at least the db is no longer prisoner.

  20. 1

I finished designing a logo and tracing it in Inkspace to create the svg file. Now I can easily change the colors or manipulate the paths 💪

  21. 1

I built my personal website for 12$ (https://www.jerrygoyal.com) which is responsive and has material design. this was long overdue and I finally beat my procrastination. Only cost was for domain only :D

  22. 1

I responded to feedback about Merrier! and learned about new features my users want, like enabling VoiceOver so more people can access it.

I also prettified my website for Notes Genie and got it featured on Betalist!

  23. 1

This week end I reinstalled my whole development environment (Arch Linux + i3 on VMWare). Since I have everything automated with bash scripts it was a breeze. Even my side projects are cloned from Github automatically...

I worked a bit on my blog (https://web-techno.net/), worked a bit on a little side project in Go (dashboard for dev in the terminal) and I'm trying to learn discrete mathematics 'cause why not.

I added some little stuff to https://www.sharetoall.com/ as well.

For those who don't know it's a very simple social media management dashboard (only twitter and linkedin for now) but I will add more options (resend past messages / schedule message) and maybe other social media like reddit or facebook (and facebook groups maybe?).

I built it first for myself, tired of buffer and hootsuite and spending my time on social media, hooked on their addictive websites.

In short: I like to do a lot of creative stuff :D

  24. 1

Added the ability to change the background color on https://www.turn.audio This javascript library proved very useful: https://github.com/bgrins/TinyColor

  25. 1

Mostly worked on a website's dashboard. Added a nice chart on successful/failed webhooks, implemented a "news feed" so I can easily add announcement or blog post links and users can see them from the app :) Quite productive weekend, the features were mostly UI oriented so nothing brain-intensive.

  26. 1

I made some great progress on the mapping features for https://harvy.app - I even started on calculating map route difficulty and how it would then correlate to songs. Very excited for the week to come!

  27. 1

This weekend I got a WordPress blog setup to help with the marketing side of my project.

No posts yet, but It's got a nice simple design that links back to the main domain. http://blog.striptogether.co

  28. 1

I made a rap diss track about the web platform ...

I have too much free time 🤦️

  29. 1

I started recording videos focusing on UI/UX of webdesign! Not sure if there's interest, but I figure even if nobody watches I'm still learning along the way.

  30. 1

During this weekend I released my premium course at Vue Hero, https://vuehero.com/ultimate-hero/.

I initially was going to wait until October 1st with the release, but since I already have created a good amount of the content, why not just publish it?

I added the possibility to get a $50 early bird discount, and hoping that this can generate a few sign ups.

Besides this I worked on other things on my site.

  31. 1

This weekend was full of writing unit, integration and E2E tests.

It's going to take a while to get the test coverage up to where it should be but will add that extra confidence when deploying large updates to the application.

I'm praying that I've only got a few more nights left of writing tests before I can get back into creating content and updating some of our features 🙏

I've also been listening to "Hacking Growth - How Today's Fastest Companies Drive Breakout Success" which is pretty good.

  32. 1

Shipped Elm 0.19 support in Dependabot.

Adding new languages is my second favourite thing to do on Dependabot (after fixing thorny bugs), so it was a good weekend. Also had great revenue growth last week (5%!) so am generally on a high.

  33. 1

This weekend, I listened to the number 1 thing my customers wanted on voicepods.com and introduced 9nee languages. You can check them out on voicepods.com/voices.

  34. 1

Nothing. Couldn't get myself to code/nothing "passion driven" at this time. Binging on food, watching stuff, scrolling through sites, ehh... idk.

    1. 3

That's definitely needed from time to time. Recharge and then new ideas/motivation will come ✌️

      1. 1

Seems to happen from time to time, mind says no haha.
