Solving Your Own Problem with Todd Garland of BuySellAds

Episode #019

Todd Garland went from being a blogger who published ads on his website to creating one of the leading advertising platforms on the web. Here's his story.

  1. 1

    My Main Takeaways:

    • Tod started off by writing hobbyist websites about CSS, just to learn coding, and soon advertisers began approaching him, and offering him a few hundred bucks for ad placements, which he did not turn down.

    • Over time Tod was getting so many ad requests, but it was just annoying, so he decided to make a system to handle the dealing of receiving payment, and setting up ads

    • It doesn't matter if your product is crappy to start with, because you can iterate and improve it over time.

    • Tod sold one of his websites about 2 months before he launched BuySellAds

    • When Tod was preparing to launch BuySellAds, he first made a basic landing page, and started buying ads on different websites to validate the idea

    • Validating the idea can be quick cheap and basic. Using a simple landing page, and cheap but effective ads.

    • After Tod started working on BuySellAds he started working at HubSpot for about 2 years, which definitely helped. Here, he gained a lot of exposure to Inbound Makreting.

    • It took about a year for Tod to go from idea to first version with BuySellAds.

    • Tod didn't know how to develop software, he just did what he knew, and used an adobe website building software like dreamweaver to make the first version. He says that there is no need to write the perfect code or be an amazing Software Engineer.

    • Being the founder of a company is not the same thing as being a Software Engieer, there are far more important things that code quality.

    • Abstract away everything you're doing that isnt the CORE value for your customers, and focus on the things that give the most value, let other parties handle the abstractions.

    • Tod got his first customers through the first 8 to 10 advertiser clients he had from his hobbyist website, and the other publishers these advertisers were advertising on. First he tried to conivce the publishers to use BuySellAds, if the publishers said no, he asked the advertisers to use it as a way to leverage the publishers into also using BuySellAds.

    • Once he had both advertisers and publishers on the platform he "worked his butt off" to make sure the experience was as good fo users

    • At first, when users wanted to either cancel an advertisement or, withdraw money from BuySellAds, they'd have to email Tod, while this did not scale, it was a way for Tod to start an email conversation with his customers to learn more!

    • Don't worry about "changing the world", instead focus on improving the life of that person next to you.

    • Don't fall into the trap trying to help the lives of 1 billion people and ending up helping 0 people in the process, when you can focus on helping the lives of 1,000 people (and still getting rewarded generously).

    • If you want to start a business, but don't know what to start, then go work for somebody else, and you will learn so much. (just like Tod did as he gained a lot of learnings from his experience at HubSpot)

    • Don't get distracted by or keep copying the competition, and don't worry about the competition copying YOU.

Too bad Todd didn't answer your last question: " How do you see super-early nascent companies using advertising, and do you have any tips for them?"

Todd, fantastic interview! I just launched a side project in the food space that deals with a two sided market. I am not even sure who the early adopters will be. What is your advice in this type of senario to find my first users?

    Best regards,
