As a startup do you employ really good people over passionate ones?

I and my team have been working on a platform for weeks now and we need to employ more developers. It's confusing to employ either the good ones or the ones who are really interested in what we are doing i.e they would still work even if they aren't on payroll.

Currently I have several developers on ground and we can’t afford to pay every one of them. Though I have not employed them yet, But they’re all good, though some are better that the others, but right now I’d love to have co-workers who really love and are interested in what we do, not just building the stuff, buh also contributing to not only the code buh the idea behind the whole project and also wants to see that it succeeds

When you talk about good people vs passionate people, you seem to assume they can't be the same people. I think they usually are the same people.

However, if you define 'passionate' as willing to work for little money or free, then you're never going to get the best talent. People with experience will rarely accept less than they feel they are worth -- even for projects they're passionate about (except in very few exceptional cases).

Made a lot of points there
      Thanks.

It’s true they can be the same people and however we’ve been able to get good and passionate one to work with us.

Since we are just a startup, we do compensate them, buh it’s not labelled as “salary” at this point.

Since I feel like you are early stage startup. Its better to go with the people who can wear multiple caps. I feel passionate one can only wear multiple hat same time.
