98% of Jobs are Pointless. Create Your Own. Here is Why.

I was 17. I didn't have any money. I wanted to go to the cinema with my girlfriend. So I asked my parents for $20. I told my girlfriend, and she took the money and left with it (to buy the tickets, I supposed). I only remember that she took the money.

I was at zero again (Why did she take my money?) But I didn't want to ask again for money from my parents. $20 was a lot. But I needed money for the bus, or a taxi, or to buy popcorn or to buy a coke, who knows. Or maybe for her to retake it. I remember feeling hopeless.

So that summer, I started working for the first time—awful jobs. The first one was about selling mattresses to people in August on the beach. Imagine a very young guy, all dress up around half-naked people walking on the sand with shoes, giving a brochure and a quick talk about checking the mattresses at a nearby hotel.

But they paid me $40 per day, so I felt rich. It didn't last. The business failed. I wonder why. I move from sht job to sht job.

Those jobs were horrible. People yelled at me, called me idiot all the time, treat me like a cockroach. Losers telling other looser that they were losers.

I knew I wasn't that kind of loser. I didn't care much. I was studying how to code, and I knew that I was good at that, so it was a matter of time to find a better job.

A couple of years later, I found my first job as a developer. I worked with rich people suited up. I had a new laptop and a private office.

It felt good. I felt important. But, after a year, I hated myself.

It was worse than working at the kebap shop, making kebap sandwiches. I knew that was temporal. I had a plan. But working in an office, I thought that was the best thing you can do in the world. It wasn't, and I didn't have any plan left.

Why 98% of jobs are B.S.

You buy QuietComfort 35 wireless headphones

Yes. That's what you do.

People around you buy things. New technology. New phones. New headphones. New and cool gadgets. An electric bicycle. They work with you, you see it, you want it. You buy it. You were brainwashed. So, you need to keep working to buy more.

You buy a pink shirt because you only wear black

I had money for the first time. People around me dress very well. So I spent a lot of money on new clothes. But, I stick to the classic black and white.

Once, a girl I liked, who worked there too, told me that I was always wearing the same colors. So I went to ZARA and bought a pink shirt.

The next day, she told me: "Oh! You are wearing pink, that's almost like white, you always wear the same colors".

Lesson learned. But most people don't learn it and keep trying to look fancy in front of others.

Zoom calls are temporary. This will come back. Escape. Never come back to an office.

You can't go to Tibet

I wanted to travel the world and work at the same time. Well, that's very hard if you have a boss.

You maybe can go to Rome and rent a flat and work from there. They won't notice anything. But you can't go to Tibet.

It's tough to fake all the way there, find a good place to work and work as nothing has happened.

If you work for yourself, you have zero problems. The problem is not the work; the idiots trying to control you are.

Please, don't tell me about holidays, I see you coming with that. Please, don't. Holidays are fake freedom. Don't make me start with it.

You go for a walk with your partner at 8 in the evening and your boss...

You are tired. You worked hard. You go for a walk with your partner, some shopping, groceries—the usual. You grab your phone to check if you have money on your account, and you see a Slack notification from your boss.

hey, how is the project going?

Evening RUINED.

Don't wait for others to give your permission

I met many journalists in my life. All unemployed. All waiting to be selected from a major newspaper or magazine.

You don't know how hard it is to find a job as a journalist. It's my passion. I love it. You sometimes have to work for free, but they may pay you $200 a month after that. Maybe after five years, I can make a real salary and from it, who knows. I know is hard. I want an opportunity.

That's very common. Most people never stick to that plan because it doesn't make sense to work for free. So they end up studying digital marketing, excel, social media, copywriting. But all say the same: my passion is journalism. But it's hard to find a job.

All hate working in an office doing something they are not passionate about, feeling lost, empty, and in the wrong place. Waiting to be selected.

I never met a journalist that said: I don't need anyone to choose me. I can be a journalist. I can open a newspaper myself, a blog, or start a podcast. I can investigate and make Youtube videos.

Most of them wait to be selected. Blaming society for the lack of opportunities.

You don't need permission from anyone. You don't need to be hired for a newspaper to be a journalist. Just be one.

It doesn't matter what you do or what you want to do. Don't find a job. Create a job. And do whatever you want to do.

Do you want to publish a book? Do you want to be a journalist? An author? A singer? A painter? If you really want it, if you are really passionate about it: you will find your way.

There is only one thing between you and your path to follow your passion: starting.

Make yourself worth it. People will come. Don't work for others. And if you do, because you have to (sometimes you have to) try to escape as soon as possible.

Having a job is the worse thing in the world. First, you need to convince someone to hire you. And from there, you need permission to live your life.

It doesn't make sense.

Use the Internet to make money and never look back. It's not too late. This is just starting. Start.

    I disagree.

There is too much projection going on here. Good for confirmation bias though.

The title should be: Why 98% of jobs for me are useless

    1. 2

He never said that his statements were facts! They're merely his opinions and experiences. If you believe that 98% of jobs are NOT useless, you're also biased. So, instead of just tossing your opinion around, you could give us some context on why you think otherwise.

    2. 1

Agreed with @11thDimension but good motivational post tho 🙂

    3. 0

It's very common for people to say: speak for yourself, that's your opinion, etc...

That's exactly the point of writing an opinion piece. When you write something, you don't need to add all the time: "in my opinion". That weakness the story.

Of course, it is not 100% accurate with humanity; that's why I tell you how I got there. I don't understand how can you disagree with a story.

Except, you only read the title...

      1. 6

You are not completely wrong. The problem however is that you are clearly trying to give advice to others based on your own purely subjective experience and that simply doesn't work. It's probably save to say that most people would argue your statement "98% of Jobs are Pointless" just isn't true. Maybe it is for you but that doesn't make your advice valid for everyone else, especially when that's not the case for the majority of everyone.

Also please keep in mind that just like you are allowed to share your opinion with us here, so are others. They can agree or disagree with you on your article. So forcing your opinion on others by saying something like "I don't understand how can you disagree with a story. Except, you only read the title..." isn't very nice.

Indiehackers is turning into a brand-building platform.

I joined here (2 or so years ago) to read about people building stuff. It is now turned into a platform for people to market their upcoming products or get subscribers for their substack. Just an observation. (no hate for OP, I like his writing)

On top of that, some random news section is showing now on top when I browse on mobile.

Guess I should go back to Reddit.

    1. 0

Hahaha, I totally feel you! At least on Reddit, you can control your feed, albeit there are ads. The new news section is driving me crazy! I still don't see the value of it and some of the content is duplicated (main feed + news section).

I had similar thoughts until I actually did get my first job and realized how little I knew.

(This was an extremely entry level job working at a restaurant as a bus boy, btw)

Maybe the key difference that gave me a different experience from you was I had an insanely good manager. And again, this was a restaurant, not some tech company or bank.

I also chose to look at the positives going into the job, but obviously not everyone felt the same way I did working there. But since it was my first job I went in wanting to actually learn, even if the job meant just bussing tables.

But with that job I learned really what makes a good manager. And more importantly, I learned how to be managed. This experience was invaluable to me because I still use management principles I learned on that job while i run my current company ($1MIL+ ARR business with 6 FTE and many many contractors).

TLDR: I personally got value working a super entry level job as a bus boy at a chain restaurant. Had a great manager and still use management principles while running my current $1MIL + ARR business

      Hey Chirs!

Thanks a lot for sharing your story and leaving this beautiful comment.

My experience was positive overall. I have had many jobs since then. I realized that working for others is not for me, but I see the value and the learnings you can get from working with other people.

My post is just a quick reminder for people like me, who hate what they do and are dreaming about doing something else.

All the best to you in the future.

      Thanks again.

  4. 2

You sound so motivating but I have a feeling you've never created any jobs...

  5. 1

To be honest, this post makes no sense and feels like a motivational cliche story.

I felt like the article is 98% fluff and 2% personal opinions/experiences with no actual real useful information behind it.

  6. 1

Good read José! I like reading your posts, you're getting better at writing. Keep rockin'!

    1. 0

Well, you don't know how much I appreciate this comment.

I was stress out all afternoon after publishing this.

I will try to write more positive titles that go along with the stories I write to avoid people thinking the opposite that I try to share.

      Thanks a lot, for real.

I attained Nirvana after reading this.

    1. 1

      I hope that's a good thing.

      1. 1

Offcourse I meant in a good way. Btw I relate to dressing part and fomo pressure.

        1. 1

          Appreciate it!

Stick to black. That never fails me. Haha!

    pump. pump. pump. me up.

  9. 0

I honestly hate reading your posts. I wish there was a way to block you ugh.

    1. 14

This is spiteful and unhelpful. If you're going to post to tear someone down, at the very least provide a point or two of feedback with why you feel that way, otherwise you're dissuading people from posting out of fear of malicious feedback, which will ruin the forum.

Please reconsider how you voice your negative opinions.

      1. 9
        • All his post history is full of contrarian posts that are made just to point to this twitter or gumroad products
        • He tries to come across as a guru and try to tell you how you should do things but he hasn't done anything successful himself. A trait many gurus share.
        • I think he wants to come across as a lovable loser but his tone is so pessimistic it almost comes across as cringe. Eg. check the description of his gumroad book in the post.

        ---

Now people like maabed can read all his content for all I care. But the bigger problem is that there are many more wannabe gurus like Jose. I don't want them to show up in my feed. I don't see why that's not possibleSimilar query.

        1. 1

Thanks for improving your negative feedback to make it into a much more helpful comment, @maantin.

And thank you, @sweetheart, for living up to your name.

      2. 1

Not surprising, look at his previous comments. Not providing any constructive criticism, just hating.

    2. 5

To be honest, I don't care much for them either, but I have to admit he has great skill in creating attention-grabbing headlines and discussion-generating content. I think José has a great future in SEO. 😅

    3. 3

And why do you read them? mind me asking! You could've just ignored the post from the get-go if you already hate all of his previous posts. I never believed the "Haters gonna hate" saying completely but I guess you just made me believe in it more, kudos to you, hater!

    4. 2

Why are you reading his posts if you hate them?

    5. 0

Hahaha! You made me laugh. Why is that? Anything specific?
