Hey content creators. When I create content I tend to find myself forgetting where I had posted it before, or where would be a good place to post it next. So I created this handy list of channels I generally post to, and it maps nicely to my content pipeline in Notion.
I thought the list of channels itself might be useful to y'all. Also, perhaps you can help me fill in some gaps?
Thanks for this.
One word of caution for everyone participating is that the people that have built these communities have worked hard to do so. To really become a trusted member you need to consistently deliver value.
Like a lot of people I see on IH. They come across less spammy because they add value, point people in the right direction, synthesis findings.
This is definitely the right thing to do and some communities will ban you for spamming
This is an absolutely great point and one I probably shouldn't have taken for granted.
Do not go and spam links to your blog post in these channels. Do contribute to the community with good/relevant content that isn't a hard sell for whatever you are working on.
I am writing up a blog on community best practices - do you mind if I quote you on this?
Hey - yeah I don't mind at all. Thanks for the shout out :)
Sweet thanks - here's a draft
Nice list @mattcrail. Thanks for sharing!
Wow! This is awesome. Thank you for sharing. I feel like I should make your own! Curious:
One thing I've noticed is how small of a world it is - I am constantly bumping into people across these channels so I try not to as a rule just post around to each of these in one sitting. I also tend to use one channel to post some thought/input/idea, and then if there is interest I might turn it into a twitter thread, then maybe a blog post, then I post some summary of the blog post in Startup School, and then perhaps pick out one key point in a post to send in a slack channel etc.
I also tend to post things in these channels in response to specific questions. For instance, if someone were to ask where are good places to post content I would list a few of my favorites and then link over to this full list.
As @jayyoms rightly mentions, don't just spam/blast this stuff out. Post it when and where it is relevant. Try to boil it down to key thoughts and link to related content that expands on those thoughts if relevant (if this is your blog, or even linking back to a post here from another channel). Be a good community member first and foremost, and then people will find the thing you are working on. Hard sells don't work and will get you booted or turn other community members off.
Wow, thank you for the thorough reply! That’s really helpful. Really it sounds like, find the communities that you want to be active in and share when appropriate and relevant without spamming :)
Yeah, I noticed a lot of people hang around in the same communities. I should make sure my username and dp is the same :)
Seeing this reply shows me you put more thought into where you post. The description doesn't highlight, but hopefully people bother to read this in the comments as there are some gems here.
Interesting approach about turning thoughts that resonate into Twitter Threads, I think these boosts work if you have the same community across platforms.
Yeah I added a link to this thread on the Notion table so people don't just go spamming - thanks again for pointing that out!
