You've worked for months on your project, submitted it to HN/REDDIT/X, and voilà, you're featured on the front page.
Everything seems to work as planned... until the dream turns into a nightmare:
People tell you that your landing page sucks and doesn't convey what you do.
People are reaching out to you on Twitter to tell you that the pricing is ridiculous and that no one will ever pay this outrageous price.
People yell at you because they need to register to check it out.
People sending one comment Wikipedia link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rent-seeking.
People tell you that your blog sucks because you are using Medium (paywall?!!).
Survival Guide 101
1) Take some days off
You've lost months (years?) of your life working on your project. Seeing people destroying it can be hard. Very hard.
TAKE SOME DAYS OFF BEFORE TAKING ANY DECISIONS.
Any decisions that you will take in this emotional state will be bad. Very bad.
2) The silent majority loves you
Remember that you've been featured on the front page so dozens (thousands?) people have upvoted your submission without commenting.
You have more people that like you than people that hate you. Focus on that.
3) Harsh doesn't mean false. Seek recurrences.
Receiving harsh feedback is hard. For everyone. But harsh doesn't mean false. You will need to seek recurrences.
One people telling you that your landing page sucks, it's an occurrence. You could safely ignore.
Two people, it's a coincidence. Ignore.
Three or more people, it's a recurrence. You need to listen and act on it.
Better to be hated than to be ignored.
4) Learn how to handle haters
The first rule:
NEVER EVER ARGUE WITH HATERS.
Haters want to prove you wrong by any means possible. This is what they live for. You will lost your sanity trying to argue with them.
You only have two choices: Ignore or Acknowledge.
You could safely ignore one link/sentence/word comment. The level of hate is inversely proportional to the length of the comment.
For other comments, you need to reply by acknowledging. ALWAYS.
If some people tell you that your pricing is ridiculous, ACKNOWLEDGE. Tell them that they are right. That this is an alpha version. That you are listening to user feedback to improve it.
By acknowledging, you will learn one thing:
WHEN YOU DON'T TRY TO ARGUE, HATERS NEVER EVER REPLY.
They are not here to make your product better. They are here to destroy it.
Haters gonna hate.
Startups are hard.
Just learn to love pain and be patient.
Your success will crush them.
