Akord is live! 1 GB Free for next 1000 users

Hello!

Akord is reimagining storage and chat by combining both within 'social vaults'.

End-to-end encrypted spaces combined with permanent storage on the blockchain

We store data on the Arweave blockchain, a decentralised and permanent data storage network. Essentially, pay once, store forever.

We're offering 1 GB of permanent storage on Akord to the next 1000 users who sign up.

We launched on Friday last week and nearly 500 GBs have been given away already.

So get your free GB of permanent storage now at: https://app.akord.com/signup

Find out more about akord at: www.akord.com

Any questions on the project, please comment and I'll get back to you shortly!

Cheers

I support everything that is working in direction of decentralization. :)

Why would someone opt for this when he/she can get free 2 GB storage for life using Dropbox or iCloud?

Hey! Glad to hear you're a supporter of decentralisation!

Well, with any centralised cloud storage provider, you have to trust them. Have they encrypted your data at rest (91% of cloud services do not)? Will they get hacked? Will they be in business next year, in ten years... in a hundred years?

The point of decentralisation is to remove trust in centralised players, who ultimately control that data you send to them. They may say you have that 2GB 'for life', but at any point they can discontinue that product or the company can fail altogether.

And if you want to store more than 2GB? OK, now you need to start paying a monthly subscription. And as soon as you stop paying that monthly subscription, you can't store your data anymore. You'll have to download everything and store it on a hard drive (20% of hard drives fail after 3 years).

Permanent, decentralised storage with end-to-end encryption is a different product imo. It won't be for everyone, or every type of data storage need, but if you have really important files that you want to store for many, many years... then pay once, store forever on the blockchain is the way to go :)

Got it. Just a follow-up question. If you decide to not continue with the above app, how will I be able to access files for life? Storage still has a cost, someone is still storing these files (I have a very basic understanding of blockchain).

          An excellent question.

With the transaction ID you'll be able to go directly to the Arweave blockchain and find the data uploaded.

The thing is.. the data is encrypted and you're probably not keeping a list of all your transaction IDs, so if Akord the app goes out of business you'd be screwed...

That's why the next major milestone on the roadmap is the Akord Explorer. It will be like a separate satelite app deployed directly on the Arweave blockchain. A 'permaweb application' that will exist and run as it was originally deployed for as long as Arweave runs. Anyone will be able to connect with their original Akord account and wallet details, and within the explorer see all the vaults they were part of a decrypt the data.

I hope I've convinced you to signup :)
