Am I getting conned?

I got an offer from someone who wants to buy one of my projects. Seems like a nice person, but a bit evasive about their background. No online profiles, etc. They don’t have a clear plan with my SaaS product that currently doesn’t create significant revenue. They don’t have the skills required to change the software (but knew ‘a guy’). Most of our discussion was about the transfer of the domain. As they announced, I now have real enough looking request from escrow.com where the only stated requirement is transfer of the domain. I’m getting the feeling the buyer is after the domain name only. Is there some sort of scam I’m walking into?

The amount we’ve landed on is modest but it seems a bit much for just the domain. And I don’t see why they wouldn’t just be transparent about only being interested in the domain.

    Two thoughts:

    1. If all they want is the domain and they're willing to pay more for it than you think it's worth, then I don't see a problem. It may well be worth a lot more to them than you. You can always ask if they only want just the domain, or the entire project
    2. Trust your gut feeling. I've found my intuition picks up on things I can't describe, but if I have a bad feeling about something, then there's usually a problem lurking. If you're uncomfortable with the deal, then say no

EDIT: Okay, one more. How much you care about the project's future may also be a factor. If you care a lot about the project and think they're the wrong people to take over, then you'll regret selling later.

I think I care too much about the project now :)

When a buyer shows interest in a domain a seller may raise the price so perhaps they are playing a game to try and avoid that. If you are happy with the offer then going through escrow.com protects you, e.g. no chargebacks.

Is there a company out there with the same name as your domain? Sometimes I have seen middle men looking to buy just the domain for a customer. They do not want to give away their client name or business because that would mean you can charge them higher depending on the size of the client.

I don’t know what company, but I just got some more info that supports that angle!
