AMA: My Consulting Firm Got Acquired in Less than 18 Months

Hi everyone. I wanted to share some exciting personal news that my consulting firm Fraction Consulting has been acquired by Defiance Ventures in less than 18 months from inception. You can see the official press release here.

I structured it so I come along with my firm and have the opportunity to grow Fraction with a larger team and help grow the Defiance services and portfolio businesses services.

It’s quite the hybrid setup so Ask Me Anything (AMA)!

Cheers,

    Congrats!!!

What strategy did you use for your early acquisition? F&F?

      Thanks @RjYoungling!

I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t luck and great timing involved here, but I think the most successful strategy came from networking like crazy, providing value whenever I could (which got me to sign this company as a client prior to acquisition talks), and not leaving anything unsaid.

I made it clear that I wanted to work with them when and if the time was right, but didn’t say in what capacity. I just so happened to have a complimentary skill set to go along with what they needed, but I don’t think it would have gone as far if not for making that personal relationship over the course of the year.

    Was it your original goal?

And why did you want to sell?

What are you allowed to share about the deal?

    1. 2

Hey @rosiesherry - it wasn’t my original goal when I first started, but over time I realized I would eventually need help scaling as it was just me. I thought acquisition might be an option for me, but I really thought it was a long shot. The company who acquired Fraction was a customer previously and we both realized there was a natural compliment to each other’s services.

I didn’t want to sell outright and walk away, I wanted to learn how to scale up and build better, so it was really the right combination of timing, people, and opportunity that did it for me.

I can’t share all the specifics about the deal but I may be able to answer some pointed questions you have.
