Probably easier to scroll through https://www.indiehackers.com/newest and look for posts without comments that you can add value to.

Yes! Did it 5 times today, the best way to help! There are too many sometimes, so maybe someone else is more desperate for help in those posts!
Seems to me there is not enough supply of engaged users to meet the demand of people who want the sharing/caring aspects of community. These same people are most likely not contributing themselves.

That is a very good point! As many other forums-like platforms, there is usually a small number of people who contribute and a larger one who only consumes/observes. We are actually trying to solve that with a point-based system in our platform PeerPull Feel free to check it out :)
