Does anyone have advice on filtering out spam? Especially, sex and marketing spam?
To give an idea of what I am setting up - it will be a forum of sorts where users can register an account, either by email and password and with email verification, or by using a social authentication plugin, such as twitter. Like a forum, users will be able to create posts and respond to posts.
I'm sure those steps alone will prevent a lot of bot spam - but is there anything else I can do to filter out spam posts? Any recommended plugins?
Thanks is advance!
I guess it depends what you are using to build your thing. Some tools, like Discourse have really well built in moderation tools.
If you self build like @csallen has, then that's a whole other story. Courtland has implemented a few things that automatically catch a bunch of the spammers, he would be best placed to share any technicalities. It's far from perfect and still needs a lot of manual moderation.
I really thought there could be something powerful going on with the moderation as this is probably the most optimistic and spam free community I have ever seen. I till date haven't seen a single "spam" comment here, you guys are doing super great!
I agree - I don't believe I've ever seen anything spammy; IH is doing a very good job keeping it spam free
I use Akismet in my Rails apps.
stopforumspam.com have an api that you can use to reject signups from spammers. That mostly works for me, although a few do manage to slip in every month.
