Anyone building a sport tech product?

It's a growing market and the current situation certainly helped accelerating the process.

Interested to know if anyone is building a sport tech product and how has things going.

In case you also think soaring is a sport, sure thing, then I'm also working on sport-tech!

What started as an interest in performance visualisation ended up being an endeavour in the abstraction of administrative tasks, which is quite interesting.

Ofc it is. Yes, remember we had some quick discussions about SkyHop before

      How's everything going?

      1. 1

Slow but steady growth! I would love for it to go a bit faster, but given the current world situation it's not too bad.

Besides that I keep on steadily building new things, among which is a feature which I'm incredibly excited about! Like you mentioned elsewhere, data is an amazing tool to improve performance, and I feel like I'm utilizing that to the fullest extent possible!

That’s nice to hear you’re still growing despite the current world situation. Hopefully things will accelerate now with the world opening again

What do you mean by tech product? I have built https://outmuscle.me, a platform for creating physical goals and challenges, involving your friends, and keeping the motivation level high.

The current situation definitely helped growing it, people are inside and since most of the exercises on the platform are free-weight, basically anyone can get involved. I am looking at expanding the functionality soon.

I tried to be as generic as possible because we see many physical products and also apps/websites. So, everything would count as product.

I've seen many people challenging friends and after the challenge is complete, it's gone.

Say, for instance plank. Friends challenging each other for 30 days, then, it's over. No one is back to plank again.

Do you see it happening in your platform? How you keep people using it after the challenge is completed?

      1. 1

So if we are talking about keeping users, here are the things that I am currently working on or already did in that direction:

        1. I've introduced the concept of a Prize in one of the challenges (a medal or T-shirt for the winner) on a repetitive challenge.

        2. Making it long, some people are sticking in there just because the challenge is not ending for a year.

        3. Currently building on level / badge system which is probably going to help that problem as well.

The thing is that people are happy to complete a challenge and it's fun because friends are involved, to be fair I am constantly doing what you described - I am completing a challenge of plank and then not doing plank until I challenge myself again. I think this is normal and my aim is not doing plank for the rest of my life, but rather be healthy and motivated to keep moving.

        1. 1

Yes, as long as people keep exercising, healthy and happy it’s perfect.

Gamification plays a big part on sports app isn’t it? A healthy competition moves people forward

I'm building a platform for online coaching. It feels more relevant right now. But even before this, online coaching was growing quickly in more niche sports where athletes don't have high-quality coaches local to them.

I've started outreach to potential users. But I need to add a couple more features before it actually becomes truly valuable for coaches and athletes.

    1. 1

What sports are you focusing on?

      1. 2

Powerlifting, strongman, and similar strength sports. These are more niche but growing sports where people are already familiar with online coaching.

    Hi @Leo,

What sort of sports tech are you speaking of? Something for the players or fans?

I am currently working on a predictive model for fantasy football fans. It is specifically for DraftKing NFL fantasy draft.

How do you deal with legal issues or you have a licence?

      1. 1

What kind of legal issues are you speaking of?

I don't see any legal issues. All the data and stats are freely available on the internet. Even the stats from DraftKing is available for members to export and do research before picking players for the tournament entries.

    2. 1

Both, I love sports and also the tech-side of it. And how tech can leverage sports, as a fan and player.

Nowadays, data is fundamental for any team and athlete for instance. Even amateurs are using data to improve performance.

You product looks interesting. Keep us posted here of next steps. Have you launched it yet?

      1. 2

        No, not yet.

I built the model last year while playing DraftKing. I started around Week 4 and tweak it while I played.

The results were very exciting. I was able to reach the top 25% consistently in the million-dollar tournament. This tournament fetches about 300k-500k entries per week. Occasionally, I was able to rank very high...much closer to grabbing the million-dollar.

I tested the model against my own picks. The personal pick entries average only a little bit better than 50%. Mind you, I am a football fanatic. I know football. I know schemes, I know players, I know coaches, I know the history. But when stacked up against data and statistics, it's no competition.

This year, I am improving my model and back-testing it against historical records and get it ready for the new season.

        Can't wait.

        1. 1

Wow. Looks quite interesting. Unfortunately I’m not into american football. I’m more into soccer and tennis.

I’ve seen some predictive models for tennis but none did better than historical records.
