Ask IH: What if I don't show GDPR cookies consent for my personal blog? I'm not running ads.

I use Google analytics for my personal site and blog to track total views etc. I don't intend to use any ads so do I still need to show cookie consent banner? If so, is there any penalty if I don't show it and how likely is it in my case?

Google Analytics needs consent to be GDPR compliant.

Why not find and switch to an indie analytics solution that is GDPR compliant and needs no consent.

This. GA is overkill for a personal blog. Using something like Plausible or Fathom.means you wouldn’t need a cookie consent banner.

agree.. it just that I don't intend to monetize my blog to justify paid analytics tool. Cloudflare privacy-first analytics seems to be free for now https://www.cloudflare.com/en-in/web-analytics/

Cloudflare is a great product. We use their CDN for performance and they also have other good privacy products like 1.1.1.1 (a free phone app that will stop your ISP from tracking you).

Ditto for an alternative. I use Plausible Analytics.

+1 on anything other than GA.

You can also shut off the cookies and various data collections that Google Analytics does that are not GDPR compliant.

Here's a blog that describes how to do this.

went through that blog and figured it's just not worth it setup GA. I guess I need to use fathom/plausible etc.
