Can you try my side project? I'm looking for some feedback 🙂

I've spent a major chunk of my spare time from last year to build Pigmnts. It started as a nerdy open source project so that I could learn the Rust programming language and WebAssembly. Since then, I have built it as a browser app, browser extension, CLI and it is something I feel designers and artists would find useful 🚀

Pigmnts is a browser based tool to create a beautiful color palette from any image on the web. Oftentimes, we come across artwork or design that is using harmonious colors and want to try out those colors in our own designs. This is where Pigmnts can help. While most sites and apps just show curated color palettes, Pigmnts can generate a nice color palette from that image you found pleasing ✨

The palettes Pigmnts creates can be tweaked to follow specific moods and exported in various file formats. Or it can be simply saved in the extension for future reference.

It is always surprising to me when I find the most beautiful palettes from the unlikeliest of images. I think Pigmnts is very different from other color palette tools out there and would love to hear the thoughts of other designers and hackers out there. 🙂

Have you considered usage based pricing? 10 free palette pulls for free, then $0.XX per palette pull until a certain amount is reached each month? This way there isn't a commitment so you can convert more users vs. hard sells up-front, and you can earn every month, rather than one and done over the lifetime of the project.

I strongly disagree with per palette pricing. Its complex to even implement.

Colour Palatte's are one of my favourite, I have two small websites HDRainbow.com (with thousands of visitors) and Colour.is. I made them not with commercial interest, just weekend projects to play with colours.

Very cool apps – just checked them out.
If just for fun – get the no monetization lens.

For usage pricing – it isn't complex with certain software and interoperable freedom money. The goal is a user doesn't have to make a big commitment for a large purchase or subscription. Instead they could say – yeah, i'll spend $0.50 for up to XX palettes... and if I end up using $2 (or whatever) worth of it, the rest of the month is free. Charge little, earn way more. No commitment to a spend amount. Can be used for tons of episodic apps and tools that don't work for susbcriptions.

Interesting model. Will give this some more thought. Would you be interested in paying a certain amount for each palette even though you'd have to go through a lot of palettes before finding the one you like?

      1. 1

If it was easy and I didn't have to think like – hey, try the tool. It's $0.03 per palette lookup. Once you spend $2 in a month – the rest of the month is free. Like it. Use it. Contribute. Don't, and you won't. And auto-pay is implemented, so that it doesn't bother me throughout.

This approach does sound viable. Will give it a thought. Thank you for the suggestion!

As you think about – would be incredibly helpful to hear your thoughts (or if we can help). Reach out anytime!

Awesome landing page and cool product! But as other people said I think it might be better as a website because in general people are wary of extensions collecting browser data on them.

I see, installing the extension first definitely seems like a hurdle now. I'll integrate the functionality in the webapp as well making it easier to try out the extension before installing. Thanks for the feedback!

Good luck! The animation for the pro version box on the pricing page is so cool! May I ask how you achieved it?

        1. 1

I'm using CSS Animations to rotate the background svg. Also that svg is blurred with a filter.

    Hi Akash,
the site looks great , i personally would not install an extension without a test, but it is what it is if its a technical constraint you currently have
see if you can have a conversion to a payed user , once you have a few , double your price and see if they keep coming in. This is a tool for a graphical designer , his time savings will be worth more than 4 usd in the lifetime

alternative you could sell 100 credits for a price and allow image upload

    wish you all the best

Will make the experience of testing the extension without installing better. The pricing model is still something I have to explore. Do you have any suggestions on this? Thanks for the feedback!

    Hi
Is there any way to generate the palette without installing the extension? maybe by picking an image with the file control?
    The project looks great!

    1. 1

+1 the product looks great, except that it's a browser-only extension for seemingly no reason (except if you're looking to collect data of sorts).

      1. 1

Thanks for the feedback! Will add support for palette creation in the webapp too. The browser extension was made primarily for ease of use. If someone finds an image online to create a palette, they'll have to download/upload that image for creating the palette on the webapp.
The extension makes it as easy as right-clicking on the image and generating a palette.

Gotcha. Will there be a way for me to paste an image from clipboard (instead of having to download and upload)? That'd be nice if possible.

          1. 1

Yes, would add it if it's technically possible :)

    2. 1

This isn't possible right now but I'll eventually add it. The workflow with having it as an extension makes it super fast to try many images on a webpage for palettes quickly. Thanks for the feedback! 😇

btw, you landing page is great!, are you using any template or framework?

        1. 1

Thanks! I'm using Next.js framework for developing the page, did not use any design template. Handwritten code all the way!
