Build a side project when you have a 9-5 job - A daily struggle

  1. 5

Yes, can relate to this. Been super busy with the day job, birthdays, moving house, family and something has to give. Unfortunately it's been the side project and haven't done anything for weeks now.

That's going to end today and I'm going to get something done 🚀

    1. 5

One thing that really helped me was trying to do something everyday. Some evenings I ended up working ~3 hours, and other times only for 5 minutes, which was totally fine. The guilty feeling disappeared and I kept making progress.

Great advice. Thanks Paul. New goal of something every day.

      2. 1

What are the typical things you do in 5 minutes?

        1. 3

Cold email, writing some CSS, cleanup my Trello board, design stuff, whatever is on mind the most.

          1. 1

That's actually a pretty good list.

I try to engage a little with some community. This is an example. :)

I love it! It's not easy but it worth it to keep working hard 🙏

      1. 1

Yes our side project should be one of the most important things to focus on but you're correct it's not easy 😕

        1. 1

For sure! All things of value in this life require hard work 💪. All we gotta do is: not stop.

    3. 2

The advantage of side projects is that you can work on them whenever you want. what are you working on?

      1. 2

That's also a disadvantage for some, since they have nothing pushing them to be consistent and keep working on their goals.

When you have a job, you need to be accountable or you get fired.
When you are building a business with a 9-5 job, if you want to slack off, no one else will give a shit (except your future self)

        1. 2

This is why it is important to set a goal and understand why we want to achieve it

      2. 1

Yes advantage and disadvantage. The case of working when you want rather than when you must I suppose. It should be one of the most important things to focus on.

So true - sometimes I get so annoyed when I get busy in the office!

    1. 2

That's what it's like sometimes when you love your work. I love my work and my side projects.

      Sometimes it's complicated

Lol the silent killer of dreams 😂

9-5 job is rarely 9-5. I have a big project going on in my job that's consuming weekends as well. Snails move faster than my side Project. 🙁

    1. 1

Yes, the reality in my case is 8:30am - 6pm.
Experience has taught me not to work weekends for a company that is not my own.

I've done it and it never did me any good and I don't enjoy it.

But it all depends on what you want to achieve.
If you want to progress in the company, maybe it's a must.

Working on my side project on weekends only brings me good.

    its true, lol
first four days you will be at full sprint
