Code for Kids

Hi all! Do you have any recommendations for excellent online coding classes for kids or just a way to introduce logical and computational thinking? Interested to see what's available for different age groups. Or is there a gap in content in this space?

My little guy LOVES Scratch. He'd previously tried a few other coding apps and he wasn't impressed by them at all. But Scratch...sometimes I have to ask him to stop coding. He started Scratch when he was 8 and there seem to be a wide span of age ranges.

Hi, I'm looking for a good site for my niece as well. Are you referring to https://scratch.mit.edu ?

        Hi, yes, that's the one!

Thank you so much! Yes Scratch is awesome.

There are many tools available to help you write code, but have you ever considered using an artificial intelligence (AI) language model like Chat GPT?

I'm also working on the project of making online courses. You can see here my project https://salecourses.com/13-best-online-aws-certification-courses-of-2021/ . My site is hosted on WordPress and its easy to user to get all info about any course.

    https://codecombat.com/

It feels more like a video game than a coding course. It also uses practical languages like python or javascript vs a school only language like scratch

It's deliberately not code and I suspect that's a good thing, but CS Unplugged has some great activities that are geared to teaching the general thought processes and tools.

Hi, I am the founder of https://kodekids.com/ A website which aggregates tools and applications to teach kids into tech / programming. We have filters for age, group size, platform and language. Maybe this could help?

There's https://learnprogramming.online not meant specifically for kids but starts from scratch and follows a step by step approach with interactivity

Your post caught my eye- I'm releasing a book called A Day in Code: An illustrated story written in the C programming language on Nov. 24th: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08LG7DW4C

It's a picture book that tells a continuous story with simple C programs. :)

There is a gap after scratch.. a good VC product if there is any. There are nothing stopping 12 years old from learning Python.

I agree there is a massive gap after Scratch. I wish there was a good solution here.

My kids have been doing Scratch for several years and love it. But they've definitely reached the limits of what Scratch can do. I'm trying to teach them JavaScript and then eventually Phaser 3. Not sure if it'll work though. The transition from using Scratch blocks to writing actual code has been rough.

I'm also planning on trying to just teach them how to make web pages (e.g. HTML, CSS, JS)

While I think there are a lot of great things about Scratch, it's absolutely terrible as a coding language and it teaches really poor habits around code organization, abusing global variables, etc.

Why isn't there an interactive stripped down version of Lua for kids to learn? Could be applied to roblox then too haha
