Collecting users Emails and password information(Legal advice needed)

Hey IndieHackers!

I'm currently developing a service that automatically will forward emails from one mail to another since some email services is starting to make this a paid option.

With that said i have two legal questions:

  1. Is it legal to build my own paid service that "builds" on top of another email service so to say, to do things that the email service is charging money for but just cheaper than said service?
  2. Is it legal to collect users email credentials such as email and password, since this would be essential to make my service work automatically?

I'm located in Europe by the way.

Thanks in advance!

    1. It depends on the Terms of Service for the email service that you use. The Terms of Service are the contract between you and them that governs your relationship. If there is no obstacle in the TOS, you're good to go.
    2. If you collect emails and passwords in order to provide your service, i.e. to perform a contract between you and your users, then - yes, you can collect personal data. That's a lawful basis under the GDPR. Just make sure to present users with your Privacy Policy on collection - it is obligatory. In the privacy policy tell them that you collect their data in order to perform a contract with them.
