Connect

tl;dr; Analysis of 17k+ IndieHackers' Twitter Profiles for $59

Whenever I come up with an idea, there is a pile of questions waiting for me to get answers. One of them always sticks.

  • How do I reach to the target audience?

It's the same question for a SaaS, a PWA, to sell jewelry. No matter what, that question is always there. So this time, I started with this exact problem before anything else.

After reading a few articles here and there, 'cold emails' was something to start with. So I gathered around 30k public e-mail addresses of makers like me. Who are designers, developers, marketers.

Well 30k emails, with 30% open rate and maybe 3% conversion. Better than nothing, right. That's great for a starter. But it didn't felt right. It's the one shot I needed to hit hard. So I went deeper and polished the list. Sending mails to developers about a design tool didn't made much sense. It would be spam, nothing else.

Then I've decided to check everyone's twitter account, to see what they are into. I got their bio, analyzed their recent tweets to see most used hashtags, urls they shared, their bio, how many times they've listed...

This one was way better, I know I needed to improve my networking game thus this is a great starting point for me.

So here is Connect, a sheet full of makers who are open to grow their networks as me, as yourself.

    Lmao. That explains this ridiculousness.

Proper list of indie makers on Twitter & How to automate it by @hieunc

You have a nice script there buddy. Does ToS wasn't a thing back in then?

I wish I had an option to block you. 🤷‍♂️

The intension of that post was to share on how to follow twitter faster

Though I admit it violate Term of Use of IH on that post, and I've just added a note on top of it.

If I delete it, would you stop selling the data?

        1. 1

Well, I violated the terms and I admit it. We're not perfect

Thanks for pointing it out. I'm fixing the problem by adding a note to it and never do it again.

Would you stop selling the data?

          1. 0

Can you make it less obvious that you are working on the same thing. I'm validating it for you. It doesn't sell. Try to improve add some charts and stuff to fool kids like you. Now be gone.

edit or buy it and resell. lol.

            1. 2

              I don't sell data

I violated the term, I admitted it, and I removed it.

I commented with respect. Call me a fool kid, whatever you want. I guess you're older than me, but you don't act like one.

  2. 1

That makes me furious knowing my data (inc. email) being scrapped and sell online.
    Not in a nice way!

    1. 0

There is no e-mail is on the list so jokes on you.

While you are talking about ethics. It would be nice to put a note about how did you changed your comment.

You are just being funny. Don't get offended if I no longer respond.

edit: Like this. E-mails are not on the list and not on sale. But thanks to you now it's on the table. 30k people will probably appreciate your efforts.

      1. 1

        Ok, no emails.

I'm not offended. Just saying scraping data is violating the term of use of IH

        1. 1

Yeah, put it on the court and I'm gonna show them hacking with twitter threads. Deal?

          1. 0

I don't see anywhere stating that scraping data should be on the court.

And no, not my interest in the deal.

I'm sorry if my comments offended you, I really don't mean to. All I'm saying is, it violates the terms of use.

You're in charge of your actions.

            1. 2

Good to know that I'm in charge of my own actions. I think we solved your issue on very very first comment. All the rest was unnecessary. It's been two hours and we solved nothing. So have a good day.

              1. 0

Well, that's more than my data being scrapped

    2. 0

Sad to hear that, did you take a peak on demo data? It's the information twitter already gives out. I bundled them together for an easier access.

Since posts like Hacking Twitter - Let's follow each other. (vol.2) are so popular here, this is just a broader approach to the subject. Unfortunately there are 230 comments in that post, it takes time to scroll to yours.

Anyways, I'm going to remove your handle from the list. Hope it will calm your furiosity down.

      1. 0

Thanks for removing my handler. I think you mean no harm, and do it because it seems interesting.

Though, IH's Terms of Use restrictions stated that:

Your use of the Services is subject to the following additional restrictions:
        ...
        (h) “Crawls,” “scrapes,” or “spiders” any page, data, or portion of or relating to the Services or Content (through use of manual or automated means);

        1. 2

I believe twitter handles are not services nor content and I didn't agreed on anything while I'm signing up 🤷‍♂️, now I need an attorney. But thanks for the heads up.

Well, I also have an e-mail list as I tried to explain in the post. This is for communication purposes only. You can't spam someone on twitter, it's for people who are looking for others based on the interests. It doesn't offer anything else.

          1. 0

            Just to clear things up.

When you use IH, you already agree with the term.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR USE OF AND ACCESS TO OUR SERVICES (DEFINED BELOW) ARE SUBJECT TO THE FOLLOWING TERMS; IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO ALL OF THE FOLLOWING, YOU MAY NOT USE OR ACCESS THE SERVICES IN ANY MANNER.

And the data is defined as "Content", and is protected.

The materials displayed or performed or available on or through the Services, including, but not limited to, text, graphics, data, articles, photos, images, illustrations, User Submissions, and so forth (all of the foregoing, the “Content”) are protected by copyright and/or other intellectual property laws

You can read through the Terms of Use for any further details.

            1. 2

Having a legal document hidden in somewhere in the site doesn't put me in any place.

              1
              2

Do you happen to see any checkboxes that I agreed with those terms? Do I need to check for legal documents everywhere?

And like you don't know these are just regular things. There is no crime outside and people only getting sentenced for scraping sites.

              1. 0

The Terms locates at the bottom at every page, it's not hidden.

According to the term, since you have used and accessed IH, you've already agreed with terms of the condition.

Besides, I haven't mentioned anything about crime or getting sentenced.

Selling email list gets you a few bucks, but you are putting members to spam (what else are they for?). And those terms are there to prevent that.

                1. 3

you've already agreed with terms of the condition.

Yeah it's not how it works, this is not magic. Also not so complicated to understand. Is this why google, puts those agreed on ToS checkmarks everywhere and forces us to click, otherwise doesn't approve our accounts? Or you just solved the mistery?

I'm trying to be kind but repeating yourself, doesn't make you right. At least not here.

                  There is no fricking e-mail.

                  There is no fricking e-mail.

I'm gonna try your way, maybe it works.
