Contributing to Open Source Software

This weekend I made my first contribution to a OSS project. All I did was add myself as a contributor to the project, but this taught me how to fork a repository, make a change, and then submit a push (maybe pull?) request for a reviewer to approve.

I'm unsure the best way to begin making legitimate contributions to OSS, not just changing a couple characters.

For beginners - whats the best way to contribute to OSS projects so I can learn by doing instead of following tutorials?

  1. 4

Many projects have tags that are along the lines of "Good first issue" or "Good for beginners" - you can filter GH issues by these and knock out a few.

Before you submit a PR - make sure you read through their contributor guides to improve the chance of your PR getting accpeted.
