Dark Mode or Bright Mode?

What do you guys think about the new format for TUF?
I am not quite sure which one to go with.

You can see them live here.

Any opinions?

Bright + Give your subscribers the option to select dark.

Emails are (mostly) bright anyway, seeing a bright email in my inbox and coming here to something different as black ? is not a good experience, right?

Well, It would be a different that's for sure, but some email providers let you already choose dark mode with a toggle.

Even like this, is not the best experience because the images get weird out too with the filter...so I will have to work something.

Even if your email client allows you to format in the dark background, I'd suggest you go with just white! I only get dark-themed emails from media streaming services I sub to and it quite fits to how they do.

If you take that route, images need to be tweaked to suit both themes, then theme it in shades of dark instead of pitch black, like Indie Hackers with dark blue here, the reading experience here is pleasant to my eyes. Also, can you please explain why that blue gradient section has to be that bright? It does draw a lot of attention.

Hey Dakar, it does not have to be dark at all, I was just asking around and it does not have to have the blue, I can go with details in that color instead.

Thank you for the suggestion, will take it into account for sure. I was also leaning for the white one.

      I agree with this ☝

I prefer the bright version but I'd suggest either toning down the black header or switching to the blue header from the dark option. If you want to keep the dark header, I'd recommend going with a darkened and desaturated version of the bright blue you are using elsewhere such as #0C3D51. Pure black is too overpowering.

It would also be worth scaling down the size of the header and logo and increasing the size of your headings so that people can scan them easily.

      Hey Scollins,

The black is there so it matches the website,...Look, I used this grey that use on the site instead,..

I have to recognize I liked that hex color you showed. Very nice, but it would be very different to the brand colors...

Ah, fair point. I didn't realise you'd already gone with those brand colors for the website.

I'd prefer dark mode. I agree with Felix that not using that blue for the header, since I feel it will make the content less important

Just a sidenote: In case dark mode is enabled on iPhone, some email client will automatically turn a bright email to dark.

      is almost making bright right?

  4. 1

I like your dark mode but not that blue

Either too bright or the dark VS blue ratio. Less blue better

        1. 1

That's fixable , I will have a look into it Felix.

Bright and maybe bring that blue header over, to give it a bit more branded feel?

    1. 1

I could have a look to that. Ta!

    Ahhhh.

Ok, yeah the archive will be the same as what I send, as you say only 1 theme.

And, mostly white for the newsletter...I mean a reader can use dark mode if supported?

    BlueMail does this very well...

    I'd provide both.

Although dark mode is very popular, it's little known that, for some people, dark mode has the same searing light effect light mode has to others, but in reverse. This is my case, for example.

    1. 1

Is there a name for this effect?

      1. 1

If there is I never heard it.

    2. 1

But, that would be writing two newsletters...?

Oh ,..so you feel better with darkmode?

You know, the first time I asked on Twitter, most said dark actually, is interesting...

I use dark mode mostly everywhere...

      1. 1

I misunderstood, I thought you were designing the archive site and could provide a theme switch. But I'd go for a single option for both the newsletter and the site, the dark theme the majority likely prefer.

I actually prefer the light theme.
