Deliberate Practices for Developers (Day 323)

Resumed listening to The Mindful Athlete today. The chapter talks about "intention" and "conscious practice". With intention, one would be motivated to step outside of their comfort zone. With conscious practice, one would focus at the moment and build endurance against boredom from repetition. And the combination of both is what people most talked about with the 10,000-hour rule--the "deliberate practice."

Trying to apply the knowledge in real-life--going to hackathons is my way of stepping outside of my comfort zone. There's always something new to learn in hackathons and there's no shame in being a newbie.

"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." -- Bruce Lee

This quote above is often referenced in practicing the same skill over and over and over again. The repetition part is harder to comprehend in my field. How do you practice the same thing in coding over and over again? Do I keep writing about the same thing? Or memorize the code I wrote???

Then I remember that the best way to learn is by teaching. Maybe the "practice one kick 10,000 times" in coding is to teach 10,000 people about the same subject matters. Each person has different ways of learning, the way they comprehend, and the metaphors or examples they can relate to.

What are the "deliberate practices" you do as a developer? Please share in the comment!
