Developer looking for marketing/growth help!

I'm building MyDeskTour (https://mydesktour.com/).
It's a place to share desk setups and find inspiration!
It's basically r/battlestations with Amazon product tagging, and potentially an upcoming newsletter.

Pretty much only launched on HackerNews 2 weeks ago and got their hug of death (traffic slowed my site to a halt 🤕 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24101444 haha).

Stats: ~8k visitors, ~20k page views, 40 registered users, 13 pieces of user-generated content.

It's one of the first projects I'm trying to build an audience for, so I'd love to hop on a call sometime or just email and discuss with someone who might be able to help me grow the site!

Thanks in advance y'all!

    Hey Jonathan,
Cool idea. My suggestions for growth below.
Feel free to ping me, I don't charge anything :)

    • Most large companies that have gone remote permanently or at least taken major steps towards remote work (like facebook, atlassian, shopify) are giving employees reimbursements for home office setups. Get some of the employees of such companies to post on your website and share the links in the internal slack/email threads. This will get traction and more co-workers would flock to post their ideas.

    • Start a youtube channel with weekly reviews of top submissions this week and walk through the setups describing your expert opinion.

    • Implement a 'featured' section where workstation with most votes in previous interval (day/week/month) gets featured and more eyeballs. Incentive for users to share the post and get more likes and spread your website.

    • Implement a 'promoted' section which can be a paid post by a user or a corporation (like Dell) which exhibits professional setups.

Wow! Thanks for all the tips.
Since this post, I've decided to move on from this project, but I definitely think these ideas would have been actionable and helped.
      Again, tysm for contributing!

Hi @jonathancai. I have actually been thinking of the same concept. If I may ask, why did you move on from this project?

        1. 1

Many reasons. You can read about some mistakes I made in my blog post.

But to keep it blunt/short, I don't think it's a terrible project, I just think I was the wrong person to build it. I'm not a huge tech product enthusiast myself. It's also difficult to monetize content curation sites like this.

If you're interested in working on this, we should definitely chat :)

First step, you need to improve UI and UX as much as possible. Choose better fonts, colors and increase white space.
Second, your long-term goal should be SEO and organic traffic. I see your titles are not optimized and won't help you get good search traffic. Optimize title to reflect what people would be searching for that kind of desk.

Something that would be beneficial would be to have a 3D designer feature to design your own desk setup before actually buying the products and the design could be published afterwards for others to take inspiration. This is something I would like to see use personally to improve my desk setup.

Hey, I liked https://mydesktour.com/. But it is really slow. I noticed you're using images on original sizes. Images with 5.6Mb is a good deal. You could resize some images to get a better performance.

Hi Jonathan, maybe it would be interesting to partner up with someone like Fully (www.fully.com). I used to work there and they are open to new ideas like yours.
If you'd like I can introduce you!

Hey John. I’m no longer developing this project, but thanks for the suggestion!!

I actually think you are on to something here!...
It's perfectly suited to the times. But, I see you are sunsetting this project.

Perhaps someone could take over what seems to be a potentially viable community of WFH tech enthusiasts. And nothing stopping you from also addressing the corporate desktop setups. Sooo much potential here. You could get sponsored monthly contests funded by your product manufacturer advertisers, etc.

All to say, I think you were off to a good start. :-)

    @jonathancai

I don't know this is not what you are looking for. But I thought to give it a shot to check if you are open it.

Here it is - I run www.tractionmate.com and work with developers and early startup founders to build early traction. And, I also run another productized service to build an email list using lead magnets and a few other tactics. It's @ https://www.listbuildify.com

Let me know if you want to talk more about these lines.
