DEVs: How would a perfect time-tracking tool work for you?

Hi there :)

I am currently in the process of building a time-tracking app, primarily targeted for developers.

I have been using a command-line type of time tracking for myself. It's simple and gets the job done. Also, it looks cool :)

A few ideas I had so far are that I would implement the following features:

  • live-sharing specific project, so people can see exactly what is being worked on and they can comment

  • voice commands, so you can start and stop the work using your voice (e.g. start working on X, stopped Y 10 minutes ago, etc.)

My questions to you:
In what way would you like to use time-tracking?
Which features do you see as the most important?
What kind of insights would you like to get out of tracking your time?

Appreciate any insights :)

I have looked for a good time tracking software on and off and have never found something that scratched my itch, so definitely interested in seeing what you end up creating.

Most tools I have found in that space target agencies so that they can bill clients correctly. My own needs were more personal to track where my own time is going. It wasn't so much about "project 1" vs "project 2" but more like "software dev" vs "reddit"

Personally, I’m not a fan of time tracking software. I find that a developer has to switch tasks so often that changing tasks on some software becomes a hindrance. So, that would be the first thing that I would want, some kind of indication that I’m still on a task. Maybe some settings that allow you to get a notification when you’ve been working on a task for over x minutes/hours?

We used Toggl at a previous work (company mandated, developers hated it) and I often found I would leave tasks running over evenings and weekends because they were just forgotten about.

Are you focussing on contractors or employees? I’m yet to meet a developer who actively tracks time unless they’re a contractor or it is forced upon them.

Thank you, thats a great feedback! Nice touch about the notification.

Did not think about that yet but you have a good point.

Using it daily and also not forgetting about tasks running seems to be something we all do :)

If anything more comes up, just let me know, appreciate it!
