Do you send yourself notifications on new member sign up or payments?

I know some startups who play music in the office every time someone new signs up.

As indie hackers we fight for every user we get, so how do you celebrate?

    I setup slack notifications for:

    • user signs up
    • user views the buy page of a logo
    • user starts checkout
    • user orders

For the first coupe of months, it was super exciting to hear the slack sound more and more everyday. It felt like we were gaining momentum.

After a while though, it gets distracting. It's even potentially damaging to strategy and planning, since my brain will put way too much importance on individual actions ("ohhh, someone is looking at this logo, it means it's great!") instead of broader behavior analytics ("this logo is successful with this group of users as per 1 week of data").

For example, when we release new designs, if the next 10 users continue to pick older ones, we will think "oh no, it means the new ones look bad???". In reality, it could be because a myriad of different factors. It's much better to let a few weeks pass and look at the data then.

So if you're just getting started and are not sure if people will use your product, GO for it! It will be super thrilling and motivating. But don't let it come to too many conclusions either.

PS: at the beginning we even used a live tracking app called fullstory, it gave us a live view of everybody on our site (mouse movement and browsing). We stopped for the reasons mentioned above, but it's quite a thrill when you see your first users have fun with your product.

I love the Slack approach! I setup a similar pipeline and then just use the webhooks to send notifications for what I want. I completely agree though about over analyzing it, I had to cut back on what I was getting notifications for as well.

I've just setup this to send to my telegram bot :) It's a nice way to personally alert me. I like the idea of music playing, might need to steal that haha!

I do this for churn warning (2-step cancellation process, so the warning is triggered at the first step), which in my view is as good as winning a new customer.

I'll celebrate if I successfully stopped a customer from churning.

I get an email for every new paying subscriber and I've turned on notifications for those emails so I see it immediately and it makes me feel good! It's like motivation to push even more, make even more progress and remove Google Analytics from even more sites! Love it :)

I use an app called Pushover (https://pushover.net/).

They've been around for a long time and have a mobile app. You can integrate it within your code to send them, who will then push a notification to you.

I also use them for other purposes...

    • When backups succeed or fail
    • When my server detects anomalous activity

It's a one-time payment app for individual use. I think they have a team plan as well.

Every week or two I post an update on Twitter which leads to even more customers 🥳

I just habitually refresh the Stripe dashboard.

Yes, I do this though my own telegram bot.
I use it for "new user" and for "aha moment" for my product.
Same events used for trigger mail, but it's just a nice thing to check bot and see some new users.

Nice, I want to frame my first invoice as inspiration.
