Doing a Lifetime Deal: What are the pros and cons?

Hey guys!
We are thinking about doing a lifetime deal for our Saas Joonbot..

Here is what we are thinking about the pros and cons.
Pros:

  • Having a community quickly around your product that shares feedback

Cons:

  • We sell cheap and give X% to the organizer. So a lot of work for almost nothing

What's your experience in LTD?

Thks,
Cam

    Hi Camille,

I came to know about your tool while searching for no-code tools.

Also I have been part of many communities which deals with LifeTime Deals like AppSumo.

I will share my own unbiased inputs:

    Pros:

    1. Greater visibility to your product.
    2. If things work, then you might get new clients by referrals.
    3. You will know what all updates to be done as you get the feedback directly from customers.
    4. In the outlook it looks like a loss for you ,as new users buy it at fraction of original cost..
but knowing the typical LTD mentality, atleast 30% of the people are not gonna use your tool.
They buy it purely because they are getting a ahndy tool at fraction cost.

    Cons:

    1. You might have to give the profit share depending on the community you choose.
    2. Users might want more than what you are willing to give at that price point.
    3. Also people want it to be attached to one of the plans in your pricing page, just to be safe from their end.

    Which platform to choose:
    a) I don't recommend doing LTD without approaching any community,as you might not get enough visibility and all your efforts might go in vain.

    b) Popular Option : AppSumo
Problem with them is the percentage share--you will almost lose 70%.
But then recently they started something called "MarketPlace" where you can decide your own price and you will get 90% of total and AppSumo takes only 10%.
Condition here is your deal is not gonna be on front page initially, instead it will be displayed on main page once you get enough rating.
    My recommedation is "MarketPlace"

    c) Also join one of the community groups which not only deals with LTD but also discuss about SaaS and Business.
    I recommend this:
    https://www.facebook.com/groups/martechwise/

    You can join here.
Once joined founders need to fill a form(https://forms.gle/pmicMUL6bjU1DEMY9) and message their official fb page for your product to be displayed(http://m.me/martechwise)

    On Pricing:

    1. There are two approaches, one to offer LTD or to offer a discounted yearly deal.

    2. Also cover all types of audience.
There are people who can invest only $49 and other go as far as $499.

May be you can have a LTD tier approach ,something like $49,$99,$149..etc.

    1. Parallely you can also think about having both annual recuring deal as well as LTD.

    Annual deal @ $49--recurring.
    Comparitvely LTD @ $199.

Someone like me prefers Annual at lower cost :)

Hope atleast one of my points make sense.

Thanks a lot @saiindra for your message!
I didn't know about AppSumo marketplace. It could be a nice alternative.

That was a great write up. A Lifetime Discount instead of a deal makes sense. It is occurring revenue, which is much better than one payment and product lifetime support.

      1. 1

        Sure it is.
But try to pull in all type of customers, so doing low cost recurring annual deal + high-cost LifeTime Deal.
In that way you let the customers choose what they want.

Doing this right now. Feel free to send me an email to [email protected]. Really bussy with everything to comment on in right now, but I will get back to you whenever I can :)

I shared my experience doing a lifetime deal in this IH post. It worked out so well I decided to switch to a lifetime-only model for now. What do you mean by organizer? Not sure I understand why you’d have to give most of your revenue to someone else.

      Hello @Gabe,
      Thks for your feedback!
By organizer, I mean Appsumo for example.
They have the community, they launch your product and take a cut.

you can test an LTD without an organizer. just set it to 2 years price. so in your case $198. Lifetime deal . Put it on your pricing page and see how it goes.

      Hello @AndrewKamphey
      Thanks for your answer.
My aim is rather to make Joonbot known. I want to have a LOT of people using our product and a lot of feedback from them. That's why I'm investigating on LTD deals with Appsumo and Cie.
