Experiencing imposter syndrome with my product

Do you ever get imposter syndrome, but for your product? I do for mine.

I wrote about this in a thread on Twitter recently, and it was pretty well received, so I thought I would share my thoughts here about some of the things I’ve learnt and experienced when building my product, SEOCopy.

Because my product SEOCopy outputs AI generated copy, right now it relies on how good the initial user input is, mostly, and even then, sometimes it’ll still output gibberish. However, this is why I implemented the “delete” button, where you can delete a result and keep regenerating copy until the output is good enough.

But still... if it’s your first time on SEOCopy and it generates some results that aren’t good enough, and you’re unaware of the delete button, your verdict on SEOCopy is decided; you think the product isn’t good enough. And this happens, I’ve watched it multiple times in HotJar.

What this has taught me is that onboarding, detailed video demos and documentation is a MUST for a product like mine. Right now I’m relying on users to know what to look for by themselves, which isn’t great.

I’m currently in a catch-22 situation of thinking I need to improve the product, so I keep build new features, when realistically, right now the product IS good enough, I just need to focus on the non-technical things like documentation and onboarding so that users properly know how to get the most out of it and generate the best results.

I know this post was about me, and my product... but hopefully you can take some of my thoughts and know that you’re not alone. It’s normal to feel this way about your product, either when marketing it or building it, and it’s part of the process of creating something great.
