Feedback on new newsletter format, 3-2-1 Tech

Looking for some feedback. I recently switched up my newsletter format to something a little more consistent with industry standards: 3-2-1.

The 3-2-1 format was popularized by James Clear (recently on IH podcast).

New format:

  • 3 tips for your side project
  • 2 web dev articles
  • 1 project update from me.

Here's an example of the new format.

Previously, they were more unstructured like this:

  • one part advice
  • one part "notable links" (cool stuff I found throughout the week online)

I'm torn. I think this format is a little easier to grow, but my favorite newsletters to write are more like this one, a story format with some underlying lesson included.

Thoughts? Which format do you like better?

I love the new structure, yet think it should be 1-2-3. Your personal touch will be appreciated and seeing your element first emphasizes that. And it builds up to the 3 elements that I think will yield most recurring curiosity, hence the drive for readers to keep reading to the end.

    Good luck!

Drew the new format is very clean and has a skimmable scheme which is great for email newsletters.

As I can say from the other references you provided us you've got some talent for storytelling which is great for a super-engaged audience but not every recipient will be pleased with that.

I would advise you to segment your list into super fans and subscribers that would love to receive some tips now and then. With this approach, you can create some more long-form content for your engaged audience that will appreciate your hard work.

I love the idea of segmenting the list. I haven’t thought about that.

Hoping Revue adds better segmentation support soon.

If an email marketing service isn't working for you take some time, do your research, and change to another software. Support is essential in this kind of scenario to ensure that you have optimized campaigns for what you are aiming for.

Glad I helped you a little. For whatever reason do not hesitate to contact me.

I love the new format Drew! You should think about adding your newsletter to Scoop 😃
