Finally pushed out the most requested "CNAME feature" on Ruttl! ✨

I'm happy to share with you guys that I've finally released one of the most awaited features on Ruttl - The CNAME feature!

During the development, I wanted to ensure that users could use Ruttl not just as a design feedback tool but also as a white label tool to create a strong brand impression. As a result, we specifically included a custom branding feature that lets users change the look and feel (colors and logo) the way they want.

However, post Ruttl's appsumo launch, over a whopping 1000+ users sent feedback to my team saying that they loved the custom branding feature but they also wanted CNAME feature to be added.

For those who don't know, CName basically allows Ruttl users to have custom domain names, instead of having to use app. ruttl. com. This plays a crucial role in branding.

That's why I'm excited today because we've finally added "CNAME feature" which allows users to use Ruttl on custom domains. There were incredible challenges, process work and bug resolving involved along the way and more than a 50-day work sprint was required to integrate this feature.

But it feels totally worth it, especially after reading few happy reviews coming in to our support team! 🔥

The bottom line is that listen to your users. Don't just focus on features that you would like to have. Focus on what their needs and demands are. Because that's what will create more impact and make your users really happy! 💡

Cheers!

Nice progress Harsh! I'm working on exactly this feature. I'd love to know how you implemented this on a DNS level? How do you route the traffic to your app after your user links their CNAME. Cheers!

For anybody working on the same problem, one solution is to use a reverse proxy.

If you want HTTPS look into TLS termination to automatically issue and renew certificates for the custom domains.

I know so many saas having the integration of custom domains in their roadmap since long time, but looks like it's a hard feature to integrate.
That would be awesome to have a service/product that is offering this kind of feature to any plateform

Check out approximated.app. It does exactly what you’re looking for

    2. 1

Yes agreed. It's a pretty challenging hurdle to overcome. Just like @ToPe, I wonder if there's any indiehacker who is creating a product around this issue.

Fully agree, custom (sub)domain as a service for SaaS companies should be a no brainer if you see how many companies struggle to offer that. No indiehacker around to have a try?

Hey, congrats and thanks for sharing.
Can you please share what tech stack you used to make this possible? Specifically, how do you manage ssl?

Congrats on the progress with Ruttl, Harsh!

    Awesome and finally! 🚀

Unrelated question; Your screencast on your home page, how was it made?

    1. 1

@oakleaf Happy to answer it -
The basic shot was made with Sketch and later animated on Adobe After Effects.

Congratulations on this accomplishment! Do your customers ever request fully white-labelled domains?

    1. 1

Absolutely! In fact, I was surprised to see the demand for fully white-labelled domains from my user list.

That’s good to hear! I made https://appmasker.com to make custom domains easier for SaaS providers. Sounds like you already have the problem solved for yourself, but let me know what you think!
