Funding for projects in academia?

Hi, I was looking for some suggestions on where to find funding opportunities for software projects in academia? Besides regular VC, I was also looking for grants, and opportunities for Steward Ownership and similar models.

Grant-makers usually have a very strict (and long/delayed) deadlines, or they don't accept unsolicited inquiries at all (invite-only). Most open/promising/friendly are:

  • Mozilla Builders
  • Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
  • Shuttleworth Foundation
  • Wellcome Trust

...and there's a whole load of them that are closed. Here's my collection.

Any help and information are welcome! Thanks 🙌

Great! I maintain a monetization collection for creators. In the About page, there is also a link to a spreadsheet with articles and grants
