Get started with indie hacking by experimenting

In my early days of 'doing stuff on the internet' I use to love exploring the latest tools. I'm not a coder, so mostly this involved checking out the latest tools that were being released with the intention of thinking how I could use it to build or do something cool on the internet.

For me, this has been important because:

  • I was learning through exploring - I learned how to use stuff, I also explored what others were doing.
  • I was open to ideas - in the back of my mind I had 100 ideas, exploring whittled those ideas down to a handful of things.
  • Develop a better understanding - the process of using these tools would give me ideas of what I could achieve, build and an understanding of things I actually enjoyed doing
  • Developing a skill - it's kind of like children learning for real life. Children learn by doing and practising, the output whilst they are learning isn't what is valuable, it is what they are prepping themselves for later in life that is.
  • Learning about the market - I found myself always looking for gaps in a market that I was interested in. I also took time to understand how these tools were being used in other markets.
  • Practice at pitching - I found myself needing to write and explain what I was working on. I really sucked at the beginning. Tbh, I still suck. :)
  • The loss did not hurt so much - I would not get hung up and focus too much on a specific idea, so if I didn't pursue with a project idea (for whatever reason), it was much easier to move on from it.

    Thanks for sharing :)

Heavy plus sign on this one. I love exploring by doing and I don't think that'll ever change!

Late to the game and a bit off topic, but I'm wondering if you have any thoughts on things that we can't totally experiment with like, say, a Product Hunt launch or another marketing push (e.g., posting to Reddit, or Hacker News) that's kind of "one and done". Do you think it's worth paying for an "expert" to advise, or is there some way to experiment with these types of things?
