Goal: $10k MRR by 3rd of August

I've been indie-lurking for a few years. Enough is enough. I'm starting now.

I've set myself a goal of reaching $10k MRR by the 3rd of August (2 months as of writing this post). I'm using this community to stay accountable to myself.

During the day I'm the Chief Marketing Officer at successful app startup. Now I'm starting my indie journey by doing weekend hackathons.

I'll be posting progress weekly.

I'm planning to hit $10k MRR by:

  1. I already have 3 Udemy courses generating about $1.500 / month.
  2. I'm working with indie devs to build mobile apps. We will launch the first one next week. This should get me to $5k MRR in total.
  3. I just purchased LevelUpMyApp.com domain and calling this LUMA Academy - everything app owners need to scale. I will publish 4 tools (CPI Calculator, CPA Calculator, Performance Calculator, Conversion Rate Calculator and 1 course (about ASO or paid ads, haven't decided yet) in the next 2 months. This should bring my total to $10k MRR.

Today is Saturday, I have a few hours I'm going to set up a simple landing page for Level Up My App (LUMA) and publish my CPI calculator using Airtable for the database, Stripe for the payments. I'll post it to my audience on Udemy, email list & YouTube.

Live Lucky!

Great goal! I also have a question about #2, why are you certain that it will bring you exactly $5k/month?

    1. 1

I'm a CMO at a big app company and have been in the app business for 8 years. I believe I've seen enough data to guesstimate future earnings, but of course it could be 0.

  2. 2

I purchased all 3 of your courses a while back. After the first, I wanted the second. After the second, I wanted the third. Excellent content. I'm a mobile dev and learned a lot. Since profitable and repeatable mobile marketing is so difficult I've been trying to come up with an app concept that could leverage one of the more interesting marketing methods you teach.

Hey @jshw, I'm so happy that you enjoyed the past courses! It feels incredibly rewarding to hear people enjoy the content I put out. What are your apps?

      1. 1

I've been making apps for corporations and startups for many years but I don't have any apps myself, yet. Because marketing on mobile is so difficult I've been trying to come up with an app that would use a similar marketing strategy that you teach since I've seen the success you've had. I think I have a concept - it's a bit different, but could work well.

I actually work with devs on making apps if you wanna team up. We have a small group on Slack. I provide the marketing and design (UX / UI) and the engineers build the product. We split the profit 50/50.

          1. 1

Interesting idea. Let me chew on that. If you're taking care of the marketing and UX/UI, then I can work on what I do best. I'm in the middle of juggling projects at work and babies at home, so I might not be able to get back to you for a bit.

            1. 1

No pressure, let me know when you’re ready and I’ll invite you to Slack.

Are the mobile apps B2C or B2B focused? And if they are B2C: is there money in it?

I have been tempted to build some B2C apps but I always fear it won't be worth it because everyone is doing SAAS.

    1. 2

They're B2C and yes, it's a gigantic market. Not easy because there is a lot of people publishing apps but the opportunity is massive. If you look at the trend of global revenue from app subscriptions it's been jumping up every year.

You seem to have a very direct path to get there, Darius. Update us here as you go. +1 on keeping you accountable

These are just plans, I’ll be posting updates of how it’s actually going

  5. 1

Good luck. It won't be easy in such a short period of time. Still, you can do it if you put enough work and focus on it.

    1. 1

      Awesome, thanks man!

  6. 1

Wow! I'd love to have that confidence and clear path to follow!

    1. 1

Thank you so much. I guess you just have to decide and go for it.

  7. 1

How does #2 look like? Are you working as a consultant?

    1. 1

Launching the app this week, will be able to update the stats soon. Yes, sometimes I do some consulting on the side.

  8. 1

Ambitious goal! Good luck and enjoy the journey :)
