Hey Indie Hackers, do you remember BuildFaster?

Some might, some might not.

BuildFaster.co was a website I started about a year ago where I sold easy-to-use HTML templates. It was my first time I ever made money on the interent.

If you want to learn more about it, you can view the road map here.

FYI: Buildfaster was shutdown in early october so I could try out other paths in my indie hacker journey.

Let's get down to business...

So I told the community that I would leave BuildFaster temporarily, so I can learn more about ReactJS, freelancing, and web design. So I could come back smarter and stronger than ever! 💪

So here's the plan.

Battle plan gif

1) Start from ground zero.

Yep, to give my self a clean slate, I'm going to start off with a clean slate.

This time, I'll actually take the time to brand this new site and create a better niche. (I'm thinking towards the route of portfolio templates for developers that actually look slick!)

2) Pick a route

I am trying to decide which path to take on this:

  1. Premium portfolio templates (React, Figma, HTML, etc)
  2. open source! portfolio templates (React, Figma, HTML, etc)

Keep in mind that no matter which option I choose, the templates will be high quality. ✨

Here's the part I need the community to weigh in on.

If you have other ideas or want to share your thoughts on this whole thing together, I would love to hear them in the comments below.

Thanks!

Which idea do you like best?
  1. Premium portfolio templates
  2. Open-Source portfolio templates
  3. A mix of both??

I think it does depend a lot on what your final goals are but having a mix of both is often a great way to go about it. Themesberg and Creative Tim are the examples I'm basing this on!

Although I'd say it doesn't have to be MIT OSS but a free template could achieve the same goals, too 🤔.

Makes sense, thanks for your guidance!

You can start by offering free templates then when you get constant traffic you begin to monetize.
Also, I'm not sure if the niche you picked is big enough, if it is can you prove it with some data ?
Many devs take building a portfolio as an opportunity to try new fun tech.

That’s true - I see what you mean. Just an idea right now, I just see many portfolio builders and templates for devs are quite lacking the quality others on the market do.

      Thanks for your help!
