How did you build a referral marketing program for your B2C startup?

Hello!

Does anyone have any experience building a referral marketing program?

There seems to be three different paths I can take:

  1. Use existing referral marketing software like Referral Candy, Growsurf, etc.
  2. Hack it with very manual work through google surveys, sheets, and Mailchimp.
  3. Something in-between existing software and fully manual. A mix of manual and automation, like through Zapier.

I'm working with a VR startup with a couple of thousand users. The key part would be tracking each user and their referral URL or code!

Thanks so much for any advice.

Can you use UTM codes and Google analytics to track the signups? Then manually wait for payment to arrive. An alternative is to just have a web form and the existing customer puts in the referral information themselves and you contact the potential customer. Lastly, you can also try promo codes, then the user has to enter it when they purchase.
