How do I create an engaging product demo video?

Hi everyone!

I'm reaching a critical stage of launching my MVP. I have spoken with some potential customers who get the idea and are keen to trial it when it launches. However, I know they get it because I've spent some time back and forth discussing the value proposition with them.

The product is aimed at the tech community for individuals or companies who sell code on their website or via GumRoad.

It's a little technical and not that sexy in terms of screens to show in a video demo. However, I'm sure it will help get across the value prop quicker than just some copy on the website.

Are screen recordings best for demoing a tech platform (imagine GitHub, Vercel, etc) or is an animated mock UI the best way to go?

Can you recommend any good reading on hacking your own product demo video? Top tips, software to use, best practices etc.

Thanks in advance,

Nick

I think that both could work. A while back I created this video ( https://youtu.be/EKrITaqtHFY ) with @rikschennink and what we did for that video was using screen recordings, and then implemented other things like text and such, since that would have made it easier to visualize how the product worked in real life rather than an UI mock.

But it really depends on the style that you are going for. For more technical viewers, having screenrecordings could be a plus imo.

Thanks @ItsKev. Yeah I think the blend between screen recordings and text overlays is the way to go. How’s the product doing?

I think have been doing pretty well. Last I heard they were at around 20k+ mmr, but you'll have to ask Rik for more details in regarding to that.

That explainer was more of a fun project for me, I've been considering starting a service base business helping with explainer videos and such.

    Hi Nick,

I do think a screen recording is a good start, but then you can add text animations explaining parts of the app.

If you're on Windows, you can use my app to edit it - https://www.cinematicstudio.app

Thanks John. Your product looks cool. Unfortunately, I’m Mac based at the moment.

Hey Nick, I run Tella, a new way to record videos in your browser. We're trying to help people make better videos with minimal editing. Product demos are one of the main things people use Tella for. You should check it out and drop me a livechat message if you want a demo or tips for making a product demo like this one.
