Following up on @janetacarr comments, I wonder how much can be done without using the sacrosanct "Mom test" - (which I found really effective anyway). Can you tell me below 👇
What has worked best for you to avoid throwing away coding time?
Great options. The Slack groups for my niche are surprisingly effective! Question: what social listening tools do you use? I hadn’t considered it but it makes a lot of sense.
Hum 🤔 - so far I have not found any really useful for the discover phase...
I have been trying some solution like mention.com or other zapier integration between Reddit and Feedly - but to no avail really.
Have you found anything? It looks like a lot of these tools are for growth marketing rather than discovery 🤷♂️
Sure, definitely, I am convinced that it is key to talk with users - I am not saying that this should be done instead.
However, I am also really convinced that observing users - how they behave, how they chat with each other - and how you can reach them through Slack or Discord or any other platforms they spend time on, and engage there in meaningful discussions can also be a great complement. At some point, I would even say that it is slightly less biased.
Thanks for taking the time to reply - what you just said makes a lot of sense. Again, I am clearly not advocating for doing online observation only.
I am wondering if there is a correlation between the 10% of people engaging and early adopters of any new value prop. That would be interesting to have a look at this.

You can use syften.com for Slack community monitoring, it's a brand new feature, recently released.
Talk to users. with or without The Mom Test. Talk to users. All those things you listed are "easy" ways not to talk to users. Talk to users.
You mean "listen" to users, right? (kidding 😅)

You want bias. You want them to know you, as the maker, can make the changes they want and need.
90% of people consume online 9% engage, 1% create
You are leaving out 90% of people by only observing online behavior.
