How do you manage documentation for your SaaS?

Documentation is often something, I personally, find hard to maintain. Do you use a service that makes documentation easy and painless?

Specifically, I'm looking for these features:

  • Search
  • Nested side-bar navigation menus
  • Markdown capable
  • Portable

We currently use gitbook for our public docs.

We're looking at making our own so our customers can host it on their domains easily for added SEO benefit.

Gitbook is great – we use Intercom for ours and maintaining it is a total pain (but I think that's mostly because I find it annoying to document!)

Great idea on the SEO benefit stuff. One of our competitors gets insane link juice from hosting their help articles on their site.

I tried GitBook, but the lack of customization killed it for me. I don't like their navbar and their limited fonts.

Something no one is talking about :) Intercom host it on their subfolder as well.

Yeh. It's basically a collection of dead pixels for us. We're really not using it right but it's not a key priority for us right now.

I was recently considering a blend of gatsby, headless ghost and aws amplify since I already have it set up for a future blog. Any thoughts?

Try docz for gatsby - https://gatsbytemplates.io/theme/docz/
or apollo docs theme - https://gatsbytemplates.io/theme/apollo-docs/
It will be static, fast load and good SEO

+1 for GitBook. Tried a few others, also for our API solution I tried specialized ones for OpenAPI spec, but none of them had as good of a UI and UX as GitBook. Both for Users, and Writers. Additionally, for now the free plan is quite sufficient.

I really like Gitbook. Their tool to edit is great and they have all the features you mention. You can see docs I've created for my project at https://valist.gitbook.io/valist/
