How do you promote yourself on reddit without getting removed?

I've tried posting my side project in relevant communities on reddit (in my case r/Running), but each time the post is quickly removed by mods.

Promotion aside, I always make sure to add value to the community, and I don't think my posts sound annoying.

I've read that lots of people are finding success with promotion on reddit, but how? Tell me your secrets!

Here's what I'm currently working on:

one of the better ways is to just be useful, instead of sharing what you're doing at first. build rapport, relationships and stuff.

agree strzibnyj, if it's quickly being removed, sounds like you are breaking community rule. Some communities don't like links or self-promotion. What works for me when I post is sharing a shorter version of the original blog post and then include a link for people to visit if they wish to read the original version.

Thanks Hua - I think your work is interesting to a wide range of people, and of course provides value. I'll have to try this!

Thanks Taylor! someone also once suggested to me that you can always msg the mods first and see if it's alright to post something. haven't tried it myself, but feel like might be worth look into as well.

Another great idea - thanks Hua.

Some community mods are more brutal than others. We haven't had much success on Reddit either. I always try to provide value first, and you'd assume that by doing that they'd let a small link/mention slide!

Thanks Richard - you'd think eh?!

    Hey!

Funny you should ask because I just published a free resource containing over 100 successful self promotion Reddit posts. People like you and me who successfully managed to talk about their products in various subreddits.

It's entirely free (though you can leave a tip which will go to Indian Covid Relief if you want to): https://yespromo.me/

(note: we got 3rd place on Product Hunt a couple weeks ago, check out "YesPromo" on PH if you don't want to click on some random dude's link)

If there are being removed rather than just not being upvoted, then I believe you are breaking the rules. A lot of subreddits forbid self-promotion and on top of that, I think the Reddit-wide rule is 1 self-promotion post on 10 regular posts or something similar.

Do you regularly post to that community with other interesting stuff?

Thanks Josef! I hadn't been posting regularly with other interesting pieces, but I didn't even realize this would be tracked. It's all part of the process!

The post I did make was not blatant self-promotion, but I guess each mod/community will have their own standards for this.

Thanks Timo! I had no idea there were automated mod bots on reddit... I guess if this happens a few times then it's time to move on to a new community?

I understand the need to provide value, but I do wonder at what point will be enough? Will have to take some chances with this.
