How ( not ) to launch 🚀

Hello IndieHackers 👋

I'm Marco and I've joined this amazing community almost 3 years ago. During this period I was an avid reader of everything you've shared and i always felt in debt since i hadn't nothing meaningful to share back with you.

Today i'd like to repay my debt and hopefully share something useful with you regarding the errors made during the launch of my first website online.

I came up with the idea roughly 3 weeks ago, made a quick search online if there was something similar and nothing showed up. I decided to built it in my spare time and 2 weeks later i had something that i thought it was complete.

My website was ready to be launched. I decided to proceed in 3 steps:

  • 1st day - HackerNews : was a complete fail, no traction at all and i've got only 6 upvote, not enough for making it to the front page.
  • 2nd day - IndieHackers : was quite better but did not get the engagement that i was excepting ( i guess that it could happen 🙂)
  • 3rd day - ProductHunt : was the best source of traction among the three (87 upvote) and even got some paying customer. That day i was euphoric 🥳

All of three launches could have gone a lot better if only i were more prepared. Yes, because like a little kid i hoped that magically all the people would love unconditionally my product and share it.

What i though was a final website in reality it was just a draft, or to be more precise my idea on how to place and promote the product was fuzzy and incomplete:

  • I changed the description of my website in each of the launch.
  • i even added one basic feature during Product Hunt's launch.
  • i did not think about the importance of having a twitter account ( create it later , after PH 🤦‍♂️)
  • did not read HackerNews submission rules, i could have changed the title and observe those rules.

Looking back, even if it is only passed one week, the major problem was me being to eager to launch the website. Being my first project ( and a IndieHackers wannabe  👨‍💻) I gave too much importance to the idea of launching it that It made me lose focus on simple things that could have helped a lot.

TL;DR

Launched my website on Hackernews, Indiehackers, Producthunt, but got traction only in the latter. I did not have clear idea about my product and how place it.

If you are about to launch something my takeaways are:

  • have a clear positioning for your product ( it helps when you communicate with your users and even with yourselves)
  • don't rush into things ( prepare every details of the launch , even perfect product need perfect marketing )
  • don't let your enthusiasm think that your product it's so good that everyone will talk about it.
  • have a social account before launching ( users can engage directly with you)
  • interact with the final users 🗣 ( receive comment and have a conversation with your users is fundamental for understanding how you could shape your product to better fit their needs)

Overall i'm still thrilled of this experience. It gave me a lot of confidence in my capabilities and i'm happy to have made those mistakes since it means next time i'll be more prepared.

I really hope that you could find some help from those words 😇

P.S. If you are curios of what my website is about, you can check it IsRicherThanYou.com and let me know what you think

Can definitely resonate with your journey, Marco, thanks a lot for sharing!

Personally, when I launched One Word Domains, I had a different launch strategy - I first did a soft launch here on Indiehackers, launched it on Product Hunt a week later (got to #2 Product of the Day), and then someone posted about it on Hacker News and it got to the front page.

I wrote a Hackernoon post detailing my whole journey - feel free to give it a read here: https://hackernoon.com/how-a-week-long-project-took-me-to-2-on-product-hunt-and-the-front-page-of-hacker-news-2ir3y16

Hi Steven! Thanks for sharing your path! I will definitely read about it and take some suggestions for the future! I love your product by the way !😍

Awesome, glad I was able to help! And thank you so much! 😇

This is a candid account, Marco.

Regarding the website, the 'Why' page gave an impression of The Million Dollar Homepage but the homepage didn't reflect this. Hopefully, you can give it another go soon!

Thanks @akhilmk for the suggestions. I'll think how to use your feedback! The idea in my head was to have a super neat homepage, only the name of the one paying more. :)

I don't believe it's accurate to say you launched a draft for no product is "complete". Like it or not, products evolve so they never really leave the "draft" stage. Obviously, you could assume the product is "a draft" up until the point it finds product-market fit, but I would argue that, in that case, it's the business that's still in draft.

That being said, it seems like you launched a beta, which is fine, but PH and HN don't seem like places for betas.

In fact, finding places for betas are hard. I once though BetaList was for betas, but more and more I see products there that are polished way past the rough beta stage. The audience I got from my own beta launch in BetaList corroborates that it's place whose visitors are looking for finished products.

@Brauhaus you are completely right, the business it's still a draft but the product will be always a work in progress ! 😃 i hope for next launch to have clearer business idea!

I hoped that even it was a beta the idea behind was enough to make it count in PH :)

Well, 80+ upvotes plus a customer shows you that it was enough. Maybe that's why PH added that badge for users to add to their site: it allows people to go back and upvote even after your product evolves... though I'm not sure if that alters the PH rankings in any way.

        1. 1

indeed PH was the best launch among the three :) well you are right, probably i should add to the home page the badge :)
          Thank for your supports☺️

Yes, because like a little kid i hoped that magically all the people would love unconditionally my product and share it.

Don't say that! I'm still doing it like this!

There's nothing wrong about it and even me i'll continue to do that! but next time i'll set my expectation not so high 😬

    Awesome post Marco,

Launching is it's own project, you gotta have a strategy, backers. Something interesting to check out with Product Hunt is see how notable people in the community can help you! It's an awesome community there and I'm getting more & more active by the day.

A lot of this is really good + social account is super important. Just gave you a follow over there!

Thanks Josh ! Indeed I’m trying to make a true connection with all people around different communities :)
