How to get your @brand on Twitter if taken

I learned an effective way to get your brand's username on Twitter if it's taken, but not being actively used.

  1. Contact Twitter ads and ask for an account manager.
  2. When you get a manager ask them to put in a request for the username.
  3. Wait a week and you should get your new username ✨

I was able to get @divjoy this way.

Thanks for the tip! Is this the page for Step 1?

Yup that’s the form I used and I got a phone call the next day.

Cool thanks. Did you need to have a conversation about buying ads or did you just ask for a username request and that was it?

        1. 3

Probably best to talk about ads first and then mention username after

    Thanks for the tip!
I once asked the person nicely and got a reply and they let me have it. Product went nowhere so I released the handle back into the wild where it has now found a new owner :)

I think the catch here is that you need to be making a decent if not significant ad spend.

That's a good quesion – @Gabe did you also spend money on Twitter ads before asking for your username? Or was your account manager willing to help without any ad spend? And was your ad spend "significant"?

      1. 1

I showed genuine interest in spending money on ads at some point, but they helped me out with this first.

That's very helpful to know. Thanks!

Was someone using this handle beforehand?

    1. 2

Yes but it had zero activity

  5. 2

I'm going to give that a shot :)

I don't know how would people come up with a name like that lol.
Normally when I have a unique name, I have no problem register it

Thanks Gabe. I was looking for this too. Also not sure if it will work as well as getting an account manager, but twitter also has a support option for claiming accounts under https://ads.twitter.com/en/help > account issues > claim inactive username

    what about facebook name?

Simply asking often works. You can use a similar process to get your desired GitHub/GitLab username.

Really cool tip. And life lesson: Simply asking often suffice to get what you want.

Thanks! This comes in very handy. We had to settle for a different brand username since ours wasn't available.

I was able to acquire the @Amezmo account by emailing Twitter and asking them. It was prevoiously taken by an account that was inactive.

I just tried this and they responded saying you need to speak to a dedicated account manager and have them put in a request.
