How to tackle thoughts of needing a more generic solution for my app?

Hey everyone,

a year ago I built a prototype of an web app locally in my free time after I’ve seen the need for it at my day job. It’s about helping to simplify the process of QA and making it a lot easier for QA engineers/Product Managers. A few days ago I participated in a developer meetup where this topic came up and I thought: „Hey, I’ve a solution on my local machine, I should just deploy it and see what happens“.

Now, opening up the project again reminds me of the reason why I didn’t continued working on this app: I’ve seen a couple different IT infrastructures so far, but not really a lot. The idea of the app involves having a bit of knowledge of the infrastructe, like „Staging server“, „Production server“, … and so on.

Nowadays it feels like there are so many different kinds of IT infrastructure - sure, to fit the specific needs of the specific project and personal preferences - and I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed not being aware of „all of these“ but feeling the need of generalizing it to fit into all of them to be able to provide the help for biggest possible QA audience.

My app would be able to manage the different IT infrastructures I’m aware of and I’ve seen so far, but I’ve just seen a few…

Am I the only one having such thoughts like „What if my app is just useful for 10% of my target audience because everyone’s [in my case] infrastructure can be unique“? How do you tackle them?

Would you just start with the „most common“ kinds IT infrastructures (small size, medium sized, …) and ask for customers feedback to add more compatibility over time?
