Here's exactly how to grow your startup through cold emailing.
Cold email is the lifeblood for some early-stage startups.
We've sent thousands of emails on behalf of our clients like Segment and Microsoft.
Why cold email?
Who's cold email for?
Cold emailing is usually most profitable for B2B companies: They typically have a higher margin than consumer companies.
Say you run an online shoe company where you sell $100 pairs of shoes that cost you $25 to make. Cold outreach might not be worth your time: You’ll likely spend hours sending emails, setting up calls, and managing the funnel. Labor hours would exceed your $75 margin.
But for a B2B SaaS business selling $1,000/month contracts? 5 labor hours to close a deal might result in thousands of dollars of profit.
That doesn’t mean you should rule out cold outreach if you’re not at a B2B company with high margins. Cold email is often the best way for ALL startups to build early traction, not ads or hacks. If the right person reads it at the right time...boom.
The truth is that most cold emails sent from salespeople or eager founders aren't great or well written-they lack personalization and end up getting deleted.
The bar for a quality cold email is pretty low, which means it's easy to stand out if you put in the effort to demonstrate to the reader you treated them like a person-not a check.
Cold emailing could work for:
Elements of a great cold email:
How to find leads:
The best leads are those who are using a competitor and are dissatisfied with them.
How do you find them?
Look for:
More: Look at the logos on competitor landing pages or poach names from sales webinars.
The second best leads are those that have the right title and have the clout to make budget decisions within their organization.
You can also use tools to find these leads:

A note on cold email strategy:
Here's how you can write cold emails that sell:
Here’s an effective way to run your campaigns:
Here's how we approach follow ups:
Certain experts suggest following up with 5+ emails (some even have data to prove that this is the right approach for them).
But heres's what we do:
We believe the brand damage from spamming exceeds the benefit of a few more sales.
Here are a few options of tools that you can use to send emails:
PersistIQ: Well-rounded tool with a free trial
MixMax: Cheap with a Gmail integration
Mailshake: Best for email beginners
Lemlist: Similar to Mailshake with better personalization and email deliverability

Thanks for the great sharing!
Thanks! Great value!
One has to admire your writing skills Julian.
Very easy article to read!
This post has some great advice - though I'm in a funny spot because we're not selling anything yet-
I'm helping build and launch an LMS, but it's nowhere near ready and won't be for sail before next year. That said, we've tried to integrate all the pieces of a good 'classroom operating system' - assignments, grades, interactive video, simulations - and put it all in one place, and let you use content in all of those features without re-creating anything.
Right now, we just need feedback, so we're giving the platform away for free in the US, and all we are asking in return is for folks so tell us what works, what doesn't, what they like, and what features they wish it had. We're really scrappy and can be super responsive.
Even if people just use it and don't tell us, it would help us know what users need. It's called Litmus Learn (www.litmuslearn.com).
I am in sales in B2B SaaS, and have gathered basically all the emails in public records from the vertical i am targeting in my country.
Have been sending the emails one by one using Gmail+Mailgun and Gorgia Templates to speed it up.
My response rate is around 10% (the only metric i am tracking).
What are you thoughts/experience using plattorms like https://www.gmass.co/ to this kind of cold email approach?
A great point made, Julian. Cold email campaigns are definetelly one of the lowest CAC channels out there.
If anyone is searching for free leads, check Prospect Role https://prospectrole.com It allows you to find public emails of role based personas. You can generate 500+ emails in couple of minutes.
Full disclosure; It's been launched (Chrome extensions) by me after I have been looking more effective ways to capture email leads on web. And I am giving it away for free while we are upgrading it to web app. Hope it helps!
Any experience with ColdCampaigns?
This is amazing! So acctually released a AI sales training (with GPT-3) so you can become the best salesperon.
You can check out the top sales emails examples and training for free here: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/learn-sales
Just a side note but with mass cold emailing, tracking your open and click-through rates etc makes it much easier for email services to flag your cold emails as spam. Have to be careful doing that.
Thanks Julian, based on your tips I'm building this out in Lemlist now!
Using Lemlist as well. I'm sending 'personalised' videos embedded on the landing page provided by Lemlist and its working awesome. Have you tried it? Could recommend it to everyone.
Looks like this: (email copy is in dutch). Logo is generated in the upper left corner by looking at the domain name. The name on the whiteboard is the usual "FirstName"
Once you click you go to the personalized landing page provided by lemlist and the video starts to play
That's a really great idea. What's in the video? A walkthrough of your product?
Basically why we built it and why it is helpful for them. Not so much about the product itself or any metrics. Im trying to convey a story which resonates with the prospect. To accomplish this the video helps a lot as the people do business with people. I believe storytelling is the best way to pique interest. Once this happens, the book a call and then I will be talking about the product and metrics.
