How you can reach Product Hunt TOP #2 of the day with NO audience

Hello, IndieHackers! Today I wanna share a story how I've reached PH Top 2 of the day and top 4 of the week with no audience! I hope, it will help you to do the same ;) Here is me on PH.

Firstly, my results and numbers

  • 1200+ upvotes. 64 comments.
  • Friday Launch(a little bad day for launching as they say)
  • Top 2 of the Friday, Top 4 of the week
  • 9000 unique users, most of them from USA

  • Most of users are on desktops

Now, let's go for the hacks!

When to launch

As they say when you launch on Friday and weekends you receive a little traffic. But, I launched on Friday and received the half of my traffic in the next days after the launch!

The trick here is simple. You can reach the top easier in weekends than in working days. And when people return from the weekends, they check who was on top in previous days.

So, if you don't have audience and not sure about a product, choose weekends and Friday. According to WhenToLaunch it's more easier to get in top in these days! Yes, don't forget to check this website about PH stats - WhenToLaunch

Understanding PH Audience

You should know that people on PH are mostly startupers, indie hackers and designers. If you wanna launch a game, a crypto app or a difficult tech product, don't be so certain about your launch and prepare your presentation on PH and your landing, than a product itself.

The key is a presentation of your product. Make it very beautiful and for PH audience. People won't check your difficult app, difficult sign up process, difficult words and an ugly landing page. Make it very simple and nice.

Read guides

Read at least 5-10 PH guides, you should know all of these classic hacks - launching at 12 AM PST Time, hunters, direct links, asking for upvotes and all of this. Just type Product Hunt Guide in Google and read!

Presentation

As I said, your product presentation is the key to success on PH. Let's start from pictures and screenshots of a product. Make something simple and use design tools to make a nice picture in 10 minutes.

Pictures

I used free 3d mockups templates from Behance. Then I used Photoshop and Figma to make changes in a mockup. You can find a lot of free 3D packages there or just an inspiration.

Also, I used Screely for creating Mac OS like pictures. Simple and beautiful. Made in minutes.

I found Screely while researching PH Design Tools for my product. Just go to Product Hunt, Design Tools Section, most upvoted products. And choose the best tools for creating pictures and videos. You can find free 3D mockups, 3D Iphones, 3D images, just images and video editors that can make your presentation sick!

Description and Maker comment

Keep your description simple and include the key features and numbers, people love it. I also recommend you to check what descriptions have the best product on PH. Make your description like the best products have.

A maker comment is also very important. Tell about your story, why your product needs and what it solves. Include emojis and tabs in your text. Again, check how the best makers make their comments, and make your own comment like they do.

Ask friends for help

Yes, Product Hunt says you can't ask for upvotes. But you can just show people and friends your product, and people decide for themselves if they like your product and can give you an upvote or don't. That's what I did, I show my friends my product, some of them liked them and upvoted(I didn't ask for that), some of them don't like the product.

So, show a product to people! Friends, IndieHackers, your newsletter. But remember, if your friend does not have an account on PH but he likes your product there and wanna upvote, his upvote will downvote you because of a new signed up account he created!

Also, direct links to your product can downvote you even if PH says it won't. So, people should go to a newest section and find your product themselves!

Also, people should try your product before they decide to upvote(it means they should go to your website via PH button). If people upvote you without using a product it's a really suspicious thing.

Where to show your product?

Sometimes you just don't have friends in a tech industry who love products. It's not a problem. You can make a SHOW IH post on IndieHackers where you can say some words about your product and give a link to PH to try it out.

Or, go to Facebook Product Hunt Groups where people show their products. Also, I have a list of Facebook groups in my Growth KIT ;)

After you do all of it, you'll be in a featured feed. And only then PH audience decides, who is the best, giving your organic growth, upvotes and comments!

Reply to comments

To keep being in the featured feed reply to comments very quick and very big. Also, start a discussion if you can.

Thanks! That's the guide that helped me reach top 2 of the day with no audience. I hope it will help you, and if you wanna 300+ more growth hacks, you can look at my product - Startup Growth KIT

Very useful read - great job @maxrand17!

  14. 2

Wow, such useful hacks! Simple and neat :)

  15. 2

We launched on PH a few months ago using the same (well, very similar) strategy!

We had an email list of absolute 0 and little to no twitter following, ended up getting #1 product of the day on a saturday.

The one thing I'd add to this is to amplify your reach on twitter. We used alot of resources from the no-code community and so we basically sent out a tweet thanking the person who made the resource and then also DM'ing them privately.

    1. 1

Wow, thanks for another hack, we'll use it soon!

  16. 2

    Awesome!
    You motivated me, bro!
