I did something today that you might want to try 🤓

My email list for songbox is in the thousands. Many of them fall into the category of “signed up ages ago, now no longer interested but haven’t unsubscribed”.

A smaller subset are engaged but includes “free” people.

A smaller subset again are paying customers and are thus pretty highly engaged.

What I did today though was send an email to just those paying customers and said something along the lines of:

“One of the core values of songbox is “speak to the people who use the product as much as you can” however I’m getting wary of emailing you guys too much. Last thing I want to be is a nuisance.

So I am creating a steering group for songbox. If you want to see new designs first (and feedback on them), if you want to help shape new features and generally steer the songbox experience, then just reply to this email.”

I said more than that but so far I’ve had about 25 people enthusiastically reply and want to be in the steering group.

I now have a group of super engaged, paying customers who are ready and willing to give feedback, test new features and generally engage with me about the product.

I’m going to set up a group on signal for these people too.

Maybe it’s something that would work for you?

    Awesome idea!
    I've been given away my app for free (since I was in BETA) for close to 2 years, I did engage with a few people, but not that much.

    However, I just started trials right now (so, no more free beta), and I'll monitor how things go.

    Here's something I started doing: I give a free trial for 7 days, and then if you're interested in testing more, in exchange for feedback, I'll give you an extra 7 days (after which, you'd have to subscribe). This way, IMO, I could talk to the people actually interested in the product.

    Will let you know how that experiment goes :)

        Thanks :) There was a bit of bad phrasing on my part - what I meant to start with: I wish I had the community you have, so I would have done just what you said. Since I don't, the above is my workaround :)

    What are you going to do with the 1st group of subscribers? I have more than 10K of that, I think. Should I leave them along, send a stay-in-list email, or just remove them?

      Well i wouldn't propose to tell you what you should do, but my personal philosophy is that if they haven't unsubscribed then they haven't unsubscribed and they can continue to get the email blasts until they do.

        Most likely I will leave them be. It costs money to send emails. We are not sending that many emails at this time. But the cost can add up if we send more frequently.

          Since you're reaching numbers where it costs money to send emails then it can be a good idea to lose only the subscribers with the least interaction. e.g. in mailchimp it has a star rating - lose the one stars first
